Be real careful. I tried this without success, but may attempt again in the future. Try to find a vet who is knowledgeable & will consult with you on this. It is important that they get enough calories AND fat (dogs have a much higher need for this than we do), and the proper vitamins, etc. Also, there are some foods (tuna, surprisingly) that simply aren't good for dogs. There are some dog cookbooks you can find through Amazon.com that you might want to check out. I ran into a problem with my dogs getting plenty of food quantity-wise, but it wasn't nutrient dense, so they got terribly thin. Good luck! P.S. -- spuds and yams are good for dogs. So is oatmeal, and rice.
