Behaviorists are very helpful in this manner. Research you dog's situation thoroughly before giving up on him. Until then keep a tight rein on him. It may be the Akita in him is shining through and he just needs more exposure to people in a whole. Expose him to more of your friends and family. With their help and frequent visits it may defuse this over protection mode he is in. Akitas are very protective, heck any dog is, especially if they are kept from socializing with people as a whole. Your dog is still young. Exposing him to more people now would be your biggest bennefit.
