In humans, the accepted time is about 8 hours, which is the time it takes for the tick to hit paydirt from the moment he starts tunneling. At that point, the saliva/excretions from the tick can intermingle with your blood. I cant imagine that its any different in canines. I'd say your getting jerked around.
