Help! My Akita having issues.
by
Please help! Although I have a fairly good idea what is going on, I am looking for any help or similar experiences that might help me.
We have a two year old Akita who has been a great dog for us. Very friendly with my 8 year old son and his many friends from the neighborhood, he has never bit anyone, nor another dog despite meeting many in our front yard, until now. In fact, strangely enough twice in less than a week.
Here are the facts. As I said, "Niko", has never bitten a soul until this past week and the pieces as to why are starting to fall in place. A month ago I had some new tile put in my backyard. They had to temporarily remove a section of my chain link fence. To make it short, they did not put it back properly and Niko had been able to sneek out underneath the fence. Well I was not aware this was happening until a neighbor came over and said Niko had bit her son. Thankfully they are dog lover's and did not make too big an issue, BUT, after talking to the Mother I found out that her son's were playing with him and then starting to tease him with a tennis ball. HMMM! He had to have a couple of stitches and when taken to Hospital it is mandatory they report it
In the meantime, it happened again. This time a little girl 11 or so in front of the house. I could not believe it and felt horrible. This time animal control came and made a report then. I introduced Niko to the control officer and he, as usual, was friendly with her. I told her I do not get what is going on. Again, as usual I had to keep him indoors for 14 days, but in that time I discovered where the workers failed to put fence back properly. I informed animal control of this as well. I did not mention the first bite because the lady told me she had no intention of calling animal control but at the time did not know about the mandatory reporting. So, I get the call tonight about them getting another report of a bite. Great!
Now I know something is not right. After talking more with my Son, I found out that he has seen a number of kids teasing Niko behind our fence as they were walking home from school. Also, we had discovered someone has been opening one of our gates apparently to let him escape. Well now I have locked both gates, fixed fence and obviously there have been no problems. It just doesn't make sense. He has been with us for two years never bitten anyone and in 1 week bites two kids. I think it is interesting to note that neither of the kids bitten are friends that have been over to our house to play with my Son and Niko. This coupled with all the teasing have really gotten me concerned that it is more to do with these children teasing him than him being a vicious dog. He is NOT a vicious dog. Of course, I did not feel comfortable telling this to the parents, nevertheless the fact remains. Fortunately the parents of the second child are huge dog lover's as well. In fact, they were out chasing there three dogs that had escaped when Niko bit there daughter. I also find it interesting that despite my offer to pay all Doctor bills and such, none of the families has even bothered to call. Of course I called each to make sure their child was okay. I believe that in private, both kids told the parents that some teasing was involved. Certainly we know that with the first child, but the second is not so clear.
So tomorrow I am going to go to animal control and try and get this resolved. If anyone has any suggestions or anything to add in helping with this I would be grateful. We love our dog and as a member of the family I don't need to tell any of you his value to us. I realize this is long and I appreciate anyone taking the time to read it. I am all ears.
Merry Christmas!
A question about "An Akita and A baby" -this is not a movie- :)
by Umur
Dear All,
I've bump into your web site while doing more detailed research about Akita's. And I have to admit that your comments are really valuable. As you may know in most of the Akita Inu web sites they just write about specs, height, weight and etc. that I have already knew. But you are the owners and Pack leaders or future Pack leaders )
We (My fiance and I) decided to have a dog that has a natural guarding instinct and don't bark unless necessary, and also handsome, and ý can wrestle and play, run with Dogs are my hobbies so I know how to train them, teach them and most of all respect & love them. Only thing that doesn't fit-in is, a baby born after we have our Akita. In most of the forums and web sites everything is awesome with Akita but babies and children... We plan to have a baby about 3 years later from this time, and plan to get our Akita in a year. So our Akita will have a family figure of three of us. After we introduce our baby to our Akita, is my concern. Can it take the baby as a threat to him, or will he take the baby as 4. member of our family. The only thing that I can think of as a solution is, introducing our Akita to childs and babies when he is a puppy. And encourage to play with them when he is on a walk.
I am kindly asking for your help and experiences about this issue. I've read the forum posts on your web site about Akita and Children. But I didn't see a question about "first Akita thn a baby" kind (sounds like the movie yeah I know) so I wanted to ask you again because giving our dog back to some where or some one is not an issue for us after he will be the third member of our family. I must tell you that our Akita will be living in an apartment but will take his walks about 2 hours daily
Another question that popped in, while writing you this is; my fiance and I are not living in the same house. So our Akita and She will be staying together most of the time. At least until we get married, that will be in 14 months of time I hope ). The question is; my Fiance loves dogs and I will teach her about how to treat, not to do, or what not to do when he does something and etc. But the leader of the pack figure will be me at most, I'll teach, run, play and accept the challenge and show him, he is a part of the family but not the leader of the pack... So can Akita deal with that and accept my LOTP authority or not ? Akita's are a new era for me (before had a beautiful Golden retriever named Sunny for 14 years). Can you give me a clue about this situation, even we are not living in the same household can he understand my position. My Fiance works too but she has flexible working hours that can be excellent for our pup. After October there may be a chance that her working times will not be flexible like this so we are trying to get out Akita early and train him ASAP. So I won't be away from them all the time but also won't be with them all the time as well.
I know I asked too much of your time and knowledge, but Akita's are noble, stubborn, strong and lots of more. Because of this I need to get your thoughts if we and Akita will be the perfect match or not This depends on both our training and his character I know, but your answers will be very helpfull I am sure of this.
Anyway thank you for your patience and answers already.
Pls advice dear Akita owners and Leader of the packs :)

Do you know the feeling, when u have a problem in your car and bring it to service thn u realize that the sounds and problem is no longer avaliable. Yeah now that's my feeling... After I posted my question I saw Alicia's post about her Akitas and about her pregnancy (hope u have no problem and a beautiful baby Alicia )
I got a point of view now but I still need your opinions about this situation also.
The problem is I read LOTS and LOTS of "Akita agression", "Akita vs. Strangers", "Akita vs. In-laws", "Akita vs. me" posts and warnings that shivers me... We want to have a noble, handsome, barks only if there is a reason to bark, agile and intelligent dog, but not a Hell-raiser... Now I'am just this much to convince myself (too tiny I can say) that we decided to have a wrong breed
Am I wrong folks ? We really want to have an Akita but are we about to have a problem for 12-14 years of time or, a brother, son, friend for 12-14 years of time ???
#1) buy from a reputable breeder that has been breeding SHOW Akitas for at least 20 years.
#2) choose your breeder based on her/his reputation for good tempraments (ask at dog shows)
#3) find and join a local Akita club
#4) attend dog shows and learn everything you can about the breed
#5) google AKITA and read read read!!!
Akitas are mostly good with children, and there are some guidelines for introducing a baby into the house. You also must watch later in life as the Akita may misinterpret boisterous play as agression towards your child and move to protect him/her.
Most importantly, Akitas are individuals and each one must be treated as such.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not buy the 1st beautiful Akita puppy that you see. Too many of us have made that mistake.
Thank you for your post. You are so right about your post but the problem is, in Turkey, Akita breed is very rare so we don't have any Akita group of some sort. I can't even pick my pup by examining him. That, both upsets and freaks me off also. Any breed with guarding instinct got to be examined and than decided which one to have or not. Because our puppy will be imported I can only try to understand his temperament from video and photos that they will send me... This will be like a gamble of some sort. Well said in your post; I've Googled Akita and read about almost everything that I did/didn't need to know. So I know that eventually I will confront that "I am the leader" behaviour from our Akita. So as I can predict that coming, I read everything what I must do to avoid it. I know how to train dogs but Goldens and Akitas are really opposite. Now I have a good knowledge of what a "fair leader of the pack" must do.
And introducing our future baby to our akita have some ways as I've read but the main thing starts with the baby blanket introduced to our akita before out baby comes to the house I think. Than always watch and be carefull with them all the time until our baby understands and also respects our akita also.
As I said the problem that make me think twice is I won't be able to examine the pups and decide which is more dominant which is submissive... I will try to overcome this situation in some way, if I can't maybe akita is not the best breed for us As you all say the pup had to be selected properly, not just purchased...
We have an 8 year old un-neutered male Akita. We have been offered a 6 week old rescued male Akita from a local animal shelter, in Barbra Bouyet's book it says that two males will never live harmoniously together. But it does not mention about if they have been neutered or not, it just says that problems arise around sexual maturity. Can anyone help us with this question?
You should definately neuter both dogs and moniter them closely, but it IS possible with the right dogs. That said, it can be difficult or even impossible with 2 dogs that are each bound to be the dominant animal. I'd really avoid it if this is your first Akita.
Unexplained hair loss--hypothyroidism, autoimmune problem, or something else--Help!
by
I'm writing on behalf of my neighbor's Akita. What a wonderful, mild-tempered companion he is, which is why it pains me all the more to see his condition deteriorating. In Sept. 2005 he was diagnosed with and treated for hypothyroidism. Then in March 2007 he began itching. His hair began falling out arbitrarily all over his body and never grew back. There are no skin lesions, no flaking, no ulcers, no wounds of any kind. Once the hair falls out the skin turns from pink to black. Additionally, bloodwork drawn at the time revealed a low white blood cell count, a low red blood cell count and a low protein level. Of course he was put on Prednisone and only now, 7 months later, is he being weaned off. The owner, who is a microbiologist, has read extensively on Akitas and their health problems and has attempted to do everything within her power (i.e. diet and other possible allergens). She and I both think this may still be a more complicated thyroid problem, but the last 3 vets she's been to don't seem very motivated to solve this problem. Has anyone out there had similar experiences? Can anyone shed light on this condition? Can anyone recommend a vet in the Rochester/Buffalo, NY area? A million thank-yous....

Hello,
I am a volunteer for a dog rescue group, you can view our website at www.aarf.org We happen to have what we believe is a pure bred Akita. She is one year old, housebroken and really sweet. Her last owner dumped her in the woods She's not good with other animals, but as you know thats typical for her bred. We are recommending she go to a home with older children because she's a clutz. She's going to be 85 pounds when full grown, she's about 76 right now. You can see pictures and video at http://www.dogster.com/dogs/620871
I have a puppy akita and somehow he ended up with a reddish stain on his left rear leg. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get the stain out. He is white with black and brown and unfortunately the stain is on the white part of his coat. I've looked around online but to no avail. Any suggestions on removing the stain would be helpful.
hi wondered if any one can help me just recently got an akita puppy she is 8 weeks old for the first few days she was lively and eating . now she wont eat and is not has lively . can any one help me?
Hi,
I just had my female akita fixed. (We also had to abort puppies, since we didn't want to breed her) Her disposition has changed drastically. She barks at every little thing, she is harder to calm down, and she mopes around most of the time. Is this normal? Any advice on what to do to get my happy baby back?
I wonder if anyone can help. We show Akitas and my children would like to show them. Is there a minimum age for child handlers of Akitas?
Thanks anyone X
i got to akitas ( not related ) form a breeder in westside, ia. he gave me the akc papers to file but i lost them. how do i get new akc papers from the akc. btw way you should see my female akita she is split right down the face white on one side and black on the other. shes got two brindle ( patches ) one on her back and the other on her hind quarter. my male is from a black and white brindle but hes fawn like his mother. what do you think the pups of that breeding would look like. he 6 months 62 lbs shes 4 months 35 pounds?
Contact your breeder. Usually they give it to you after you spay or neuter your pup.
Papers usually don't mean anyting unless the sire and dam are champions.
Good luck
Well, my Akita is 4 and a half years old and she hasn't mated yet. I mean, we've put her with 4 different studs but she doesn't seem to allow any of them to mount her. She gets aggressive and/or sits. I don't know if in the 4 times, she hasn't been completely ready or it's just her and if there is any special technique I could use to mate her.
You have a 'non-mating' Akita. This is common in certain lines of Akitas that have the genetic predisposition. They are physically unable to conceive. The downside of this is that they are also predisposed to endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and other reproductive tract problems. You should have her spayed IMMEDIATELY or you will have tons and tons of vet bills later. I'm glad you found out now!
9 1/2 yr old male intact akita with blood in urine
by Fred
My 9 1/2 year old male akita has blood in his urine...most pronounced at the very end of his stream ( when he is about empty)....he also seems to have difficulty going. Vet put him on anitbiotics for a month but he still has the prob...Now they want to put him under and take x-rays and ultrasounds to determine if its prostate or bladder prob (stones). He is not neutered and I am worried about the danger associated with putting a dog of this age under anesthesia, yet i realize this prob must be addressed. He does appear to be uncomfortable from time to time. Am i doing the right thing?....Is this the next logical step?
If it looks like blood as you describe instead of brownish urine, its a downstream problem and probably not the kidneys or bladder. And at that age, in an intact male, with the presentation of blood as you described, its almost a sure thing that its a prostate problem. Do you know what the pH of the urine is? It probably wont be a bladder stone unless the pH is elevated- say 8 or more.
I understand your concern with anesthesia, but 9.5 isnt really much of a concern on a healthy dog that should live to be 12 or so. Well, more of a concern than ir always will be when your baby has to be knocked out. You are definately doing the right thing. Let me know how it goes and the diagnosis. Good Luck!
Turns out to be enlarged prostate w/cysts and bladder stones
by Fred
Thanks for your response. I proscastinated, as usual for me, and sure enough low and behold, something else happened...out of the blue he just suddenly tore some hind leg elbow ligaments just hiking at the park...poor guy could hardly walk......fortunately i was able to tie him to a tree and get to him with my car. Now he had to be X-RAYED!.... prob a good thing cause the Vet said the leg was the least of his problems and that with the enlarged prostate with cysts he should first be neutered.... I hated to do that cause I always fear it has bad side-effects, but I felt I had no choice and Id regret it down the road, if i didnt.. He is recovering at the hospital as I write this. The sedation went fine, and they let me be with him for it, which made it less stressful for him ( he is subject to seizures when stressed). We will monitor prostate from now on.
They plan to try to relieve the bladder stones with diet initially and surgery if no luck. The concern here is that he may attempt to pass a stone and if it gets lodged in his urethra... could be a life threatening situation. So ill have to watch him closely. Finally the leg will need to be addressed or he will limp forever, ...not good...ill have to see what they say, i guess surgery...
I feel bad for him and worse that i didnt act quicker as he will be 10 in APRIL. He is defintely like a child to me....and i know some ppl look at that with scorn, but i cant help it, I spend so much time with him.
Hello,
We have had Akitas for about 10 years now. When our first pair had to be put down due to serious health problem(they were both 11 yrs old)we decided we wanted to have akitas again.
We have a 5 yr old male(we have had him for a year) who came from a kennel reduction and a 2 yr old female ( just got her 4 months ago) from the same breeder.
All was fine untill we bred the akitas.Once pregnant, our female's temperment has changed. First she attacked my Shih Tzu who is an 8 yr old neuter. She went into a frenzy and if my husband and I had not both been there, our little guy would have been dead. She kept going for him and pulled him away from my husband. He picked him up again and she tried again to grab him. I had to pull her back and hold her. She had tollereated him up to this point. he was injured and required vet care for his wounds. I also noticed that she was acting very strange in that she began to pace and bark and growl when someone was near our yard. She seemed to accept that before. She ended up delivering her litter 2 weeks early and none of the pups survived. Since then she has really gone strange. She jumps on the fence and acts like a junk yard dog if children are close to, but outside of our yard. It is like she goes into a frenzy and I have to physicly restrain her. I am in contact with the breeder we got our dogs from and she is very concerned over this behaviour and says she puts dogs down when they act like this. She has a zero tollerance to agression in her Akitas.
I guess I am putting out feelers to get some feedback from others.
My 6-year old Akita have been limping for about 3 weeks now (his rear left leg). I took him to the vet last week, the vet didn't find anything wrong with his paw and the x-rays didn't show hip dysplasia problem or anything wrong with the TPLO surgery he had 4 years ago. We were givng Robaxin and Ramadol and he's been taking them for the past 7 days now. He's still limping, refuse to put pressure on his paw (like he's tip-toeing all the time). Do you have any idea(s) about what else I can do? Anything information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated!
I was referred to a specialist (osteo surgeon). The vet took 2 more x-rays and did a fluid tap. The vet still didn't see any injury and/or anything wrong with my akita's prior TPLO surgery. So, she's referring the x-ray to a radiologist for 2nd opinion. However, the vet did mention that based on the way my dog is limping (because how he responded to certain movement - knee and hip), she gave the worst scenario which is...either bone or soft tissue cancer. ...If the x-ray and the fluid tap come back negative, I'll have to do MRI or CAT on my dog to see if it's soft tissue cancer.
The vet put my baby on Rimadyl and another stronger pain killer for now.
Anna, I dont have any thing to offer than the hope that all goes well with your babyboy. It sounds like you are doing everything you can by seeking a specialist's help. Good Luck!
Hello. I have an Akita that is now 10 years old. At age of 6 he also began limping. I took him to so many vets including holistic and a Vet College at a well known mid-western university. I have spent a lot of money on vet visits, various tests, accupuncture, etc. There seemed to be no consensus as to the problem. He began limping for no apparent reason. Arthritis, autoimmune deficiency were the two diagnosis that seemed to come up most frequently.
For the last four years it has just been a matter of pain management for my boy. He takes 20mg of prednisone a day, Dog Gone Pain, two different Chinese herb pills, Heppato support, and other nutritional supplements. He never complains about the pain, although recently has shown significant difficulty in climbing stairs.
I have more information regarding diagnosis if you are interested.
My Akita, Nicky is 20 months old and has a TERRIBLE time with wearing out. I know the heat of summer can play a big role in this but he has shown this problem even in the winter. We bring him to the dog park and he wears out very quickley, 30 minutes or less of being there. He is not overweight at 116 lbs and is very muscular. Please help! Also he is having skin problems and we are awating the results on his blood tests for alergy problems. I have him on Innova Evo (no grain) I would like to know what kind of food would be best for Akita's, brand and type!
Thanks, Leslie
30 minutes is a LOOOOOOOOOOG time in the summer for a dog of any breed to be continuously active. I'd cut that to 5-10 minutes and have a break to cool down and drink a bit of water before playing again.
Too many good foods out there to name. Look for one that has no soy products and lists corn as the #3 ingredient or lower in the list.
I have two male Akitas and one female. They have all been the best of friends since I have had them. A few days ago the boys got into a fight when my husband came home. They have been together for over two years and have always been very loving to each other. We have always made sure that they both got attention together and loved and petted at the same time. They were soooo close to the point that they got out of the fence together one day a few months ago(which one seemed to manage that escape quite often, but never went far. The day they both got out, they were gone for two days. I was scared to death! When they came home, the older one who never got out, his feet were raw from walking through the woods. The other male would not leave him until he could get home. they both came home together. Now, after the fight, the older one will not let it go. We have seperated them, of course. Why all of a sudden does he seem to hate him? Please help!!!! I love my boys!!!!
My first question, of course, is how old are the dogs. I have owned 6 Akita's, and when the "Puppy" grows up, there is a fight for the leader of the pack. Which, you know from owing an Akita, is you, or your husband.
It really doesn't matter who is the leader, you don't want to try to break them up during a fight. They are intent on one thing, ownership of the manor. We had to seperate the two dogs 24/7, but it worked for us. I spent time with each dog, but outside, away from the other. No, they never where friends again, we just learned a new Akita trait.
You need to read more on the breed. When they mature at about three years old you stand a good chance of one killing the other. There
is hardly ever a male akita that will give in on being the dominant dog. The Japanese hunted them only a male and a female together for
this very reason. It's part of the breed. My first one back in the early 70's stayed tolerant with one of his litter mates through out their
whole lives but they were both well trained , never allowed to growl at each other without being reprimanded and were not together very
often after the three year old mark. After having a fight please don't allow them back together.
Our akita has developed an odd habit of chewing on her paws. She likes to pull the hair out. It is leaving a few hairless patches. She doesn't have fleas, and her toenails are trimmed. Any ideas on why she is doing this? She has plenty of chew bones, etc., so that is not the problem. Has anyone encountered this particular problem with their akita? Thanks.
Could be boredom or even allergies. Keep 1/3 of her toys put up for at least a week and rotate them. If that doesnt work get her allergy tested- I had an akita ong ago where paw chewing was the first sign of a food allergy.
Both of my Akita's do this and its from allergies! What kind of food are you feeding? I would try changing to a grain free food and start there and if that does not help get allergy testing done! If you have any other questions feel free to email me angmar78@msn.com
I've been waiting for the snow season so I could take Rosko to the snow, He's a year old now and about 100lbs... Very healthy dog. Is there anything I can do to protect him from the elements. like snow boots or something I seen them at the local pet shop, and I don't want him to get frost bite on his toes.
Akita's love snow. When mine first got a taste of snow and realized how cold and wet it was he couldn't wait to get out in it and roll around and play. He stays pretty hot all the time so snow is perfect for him to cool off in. I haven't noticed even the slightest bit of frost bite or any harmful effects caused by snow.
My husband and I are considering an Akita puppy. I have some concerns because we have a small poodle mix who plays very rough. Has anyone had an experience bringing an Akita into the home with other small breeds? Any information on how the two can be introduced would be helpful!
I'd advise getting the opposite sex from the current dog. And unless your dog is psychotic, he should do fine with a new puppy. The question is: do YOU know how to raise an Akita?
I have a pomeranian-poodle mix who like to play rough. when I brought home my second male Akita puppy my mix took him under his wing and they were best friends. Of course they was rough play. As my Akita got bigger and bigger, he did not change his play with the now very much smaller dog and would hurt him, not intentionally. It progressed to the point that the smaller dog felt threatened and would bite him. He took this for a while and now we have to keep them apart. Hope this helps.
