Female Akita Wanted

by

We are looking for a puppy or young female Akita. Does not have to have papers, just looking for a pet. We already have a 7yr. old male akita so we are familiar with the breed. We are not looking to spend much or we could also set up a payment agreement. We are in Northern IL. We have a fenced in yard and 2 small kids so we'd prefer her to grow up with them. Our other one is excellent with them. Please email me. Thanks! ~Nicole~

Great story!

by Whitney

You've already lied to MARS in trying to get an Akita. You said your male was 5 years old, then 8 years old, now you are saying your male is 7 years old? Can't count can you!

You also don't mention here that your male is not neutered and that your looking to put out some puppies of your own! You want to be a Back Yard Breeder. You also admitted that your male has never been on heartworm preventative and tried to lie to a shelter worker and say that Heartworm doesn't exist in IL.

Not looking to spend much? You were asked to pay $70 for an Akita from IN and you refused. Thank goodness! Now you want to set up a payment plan??? For what $50??? You want to pay $5 a week until your dog is paid off??? Thanks for shopping at Walmart!

Two small kids?? How about two toddlers, thats what you said before. Changing your story again?

You don't deserve the Akita you have, let alone a new one.

Why don't you mention that you've been trolling all over the internet looking for cheap Akitas. Any age, male or female, adult or puppy. Any Akita you can get for either free or cheap. So what's the name of the research lab you're reselling these dogs too??

If the response we have read is true, then THANK YOU FOR RUINING IT for the rest of us that are trying to rescue an Akita. Most of us are legit, but reading the responses We don't know about you. In Canada there is nothing to be rescued and you are luck to be able to get access to this dogs easily. Don't mess around with the gene pool. Let the true Breeders do their work to further the proper gene pool.

We have been in touch and there are NO MALES to be adopted in Canada. We have been searching for 2 yrs. we have even placed a few dogs ourselves with success. The breed is not popular in Canada therefore rescues are few and far between. But thank you for the Website, we have checked it out and the Akita Action out also.

Just got back for the ROYAL WINTER FAIR in TO and no Breeders of Akitas bothered to show or apply for it. We were disappointed. Besides we own a 3 yr old Female that we purchased. She is AKC registered. Besides there are many Akitas that need to be rescued so why buy a pup when we can save a life.

6yr old female Akita

by

Hi Nicole, I know you wanted to get a puppy but I was wondering if you would consider a six year old who was raised in a family with kids? I acquired her (Tagler) a couple of days ago as her owners wife no longer wanted her. She said that her husband wasn't taking care of her and that she was tired of doing all the work and that her new son has Asthma and the dog could not stay in the house. I, being the dog lover that I am, told them that I would find a home for her. The only problem being is that last night she tried to eat my 10 year old, 22lb Alpha female Terrier mix. Thus leaving me with a $200 vet bill and a very upset stomach! Tegler is really a great dog but she definately is an Akita Let me know what you think.
Sincerely,
Lizane

I also miss that place. It had a nice mix of posters. I didnt post much, but I did read it regularly for several years. It was a good source of practical information on akitas.

What happened, in case you didnt know, is that there was some trolling or teasing that got out of hand. That, combined with some oversensitive egos lead to overreaction by the board owner, who made the problem worse by forming his own faction and somehow angering everyone even more. The major posters then split up like squabbling children and formed their own forums. There are two current forums that I am aware of, JB's forum where they all tell each other how nice they are all the time, and a breeder's forum where the high and mightly require a password even to read their board. I guess they think some one cares. Maybe they discuss akita secrets that cant be trusted to the public at large. Some of the best posters, like Sharon, Gina and Keith just plain left the forums altogether. I think the whole problem could have been averted if the forum owner had taken more of an interest in his own board.

"Average" Pet Owners

Most pet owners can read and follow directions. And with all the back biting of previous forums, I think that most people LIKE restricted access. You know, keep out the trash.....

I also predict that most common pet owners will be able to follow directions when prompted to apply to become a member. JMO

trash even on the restricted access forums. What I'm saying is if people are surfing looking for a forum to ask advice they are probably not going to bother to apply for membership. An open forum, obviously will get a lot more traffic and if people can't deal with the backbiting then don't take part. All forums and lists are like that for the most part. People do not always agree. Check out the Akita L to see that; but the one thing all those hundreds of people on the L have is they all love Akitas.

I have a problem. I brought in a stray cat after I defleaed it and got tests for all the diseases it could have. My akita and the cat gets along wonderfully but my cat and the stray are not getting along. The stray cat appears as thought it may have been in a few cat fights. My cat seems to want to investigate and be friends, however, the new cat wants nothing to do with KIKI and hisses and swats at her. What am I to do? I really love my old cat and I really like the new cat. Will they get used to each other? How can I hasten it abit?

She does go outside sometimes and has very little accidents, appart from when I am out.

Hello,

It's only that when it's time to come in I have to pick her up and bring her inside, is there anything I can do to get her to come in on her own?

Come in after play.

by Scott

Well Clare here's where I am.
I allow her to run in the evening with the main lesh off, I take her choke collar and tie it so it's not in the way of her running or when it's time to potty.
I went to Wal Mart and bought so "Hollywood Stars" liver treats and she LOVES them. So when it's time to come inside I'll call her and shake the box of treats, she comes running, I'll give her a treat for coming and while she's snacking I'll untie her choke collar and began to say "Lady inside" as we began to walk towards the back gate, once inside the back gate I'll reward her again for coming inside even with my help, then instead of locking the gate and going inside myself I'll sit outback and love on her so that coming in after play is also a good experince, and I tell you what, "it's working".
I'll let her play inside the back gate until she's ready to come in the house and she'll let us know she wants in by bumping on the back door.
She has impressed me so it's hard to explain.
I'm going to take pictures tomorrow, she's 121/2 weeks old and growing like crazy.
Later,
Scott

Can anyone offer advice on treating our Akita's swollen hock? long....

by

We have a 4 yr old male Akita. Several months ago he came down with an unexplained swollen hock. He had had a minor problem a couple years ago in the same hock but it was after tearing around the yard in excited play, & it went away after a couple days. This time there seemed to be no cause, it was much worse, & it wouldn't get any better. We took him to the vet & the long process began. At first he was put on Rimadyl (100mg, 1tab 2Xday) until his appointment for X-rays a week later. No change in that week. His X-rays showed nothing wrong. Another week after that our Akita was seen by an orthopedic specialist...he couldn't determine the reason through examination & ran a joint tap. Culture & Sensitivity & Cytology were done. When the tests came back about a week later, there was still no obvious cause determined, & he was put on Cephalexin (500mg, 2caps 2Xday, enough to last 1.5 months). About 2 weeks later with still no improvements, the orthopedic specialist speculated the swelling was caused by Auto-immune Disease, although dogs with the disorder tend to have more than one joint affected (& not always the same ones). In addition to the remaining Cephalexin prescription, our Akita was put on a high dose of Prednisone (20mg, 2tabs 2Xday) along with Cimetidine (300mg, 1tab 2Xday) for 2 weeks (the swelling was completely gone within a day or 2), then a lesser amount of Prednisone (1 tab 2Xday) for another week, & was supposed to take the Prednisone at an even lesser amount (1tab 1Xday) for another week, but we had a serious problem...our dog became weak, lethargic, his gut was swollen, he was eating twice as much as usual but was losing a lot of weight. I immediately suspected the medication was having an ill effect & wanted to take him off of them. I took him to the vet, he was examined & blood was drawn for tests. A few hours later the test results came back- our poor Akita's liver enzymes were high, ALT was 1100 when the normal level is around 90! To my relief, the vet allowed us to stop the Prednisone (I would have regardless at that point). Within days of halting the meds, there was dramatic improvement in our dog. He gained his energy back, slowly his abdomen shrank & he began to regain weight. He still needs to go back in to check his liver enzymes to make sure, but I think they will be very much improved. Happy ending right? Unfortunately not. I just noticed today that our Akita's hock is again beginning to swell. Yes, the same one. It doesn't seem to me like your "typical" Auto-immune Disease response, but I am no expert by any means. Anyone have any input? Even if it is AD, he sure can't be put on the same meds he was previously...any suggestions? Please help!

Looking for male akita

by

I was interested in purchasing a male Akitas of the Ichinoseki lines. This would be a dog with "Goromaru-Go in the pedigree. This is the old "country" type of akita. They tend to be lower in stature, with heavier bone and slightly longer. I know America has mostly Dewa strains (the german separd influenced dogs), or Dewa Ichinoseki crosses. my original male was out of these lines and he was awesome! But my parents got him for me as a pet and lost the breeders name (it was 15 years ago). anyone?? thanks!

Akita

by

Doug,

Maybe you can help. My husband & I took our dog "SAM" to the SPCA on December 1 because we sold our house and had to move to an apartment. After we got home we realized that we couldn't live without him and that we would find a house to live in while our house is being built. Well, we went back the next day and was told that he had been adopted. He is a beautiful black/silver akita They wont tell us anything. I don't know what to do. We are devastated and will pay $500.00 or more to get him back. Do you know anybody at SPCA that will at least call the new owners and tell them that we miss him very much and would do just about anything to get him back.

Help

by Gord and Kelly Stephens

We are currently trying to adopt a male akita from a rescue club in the US. We are not having any luck. Any males we have expressed an interest in, have currently been adopted. We have been told that the dog has currently become agressive towards strangers and children but when I checked the adoption placement board he was adopted.

Our question is what are the rules for rescue clubs about disclosure on adoptions and potential applicants?
Should the clubs not have to tell applicants about pending adooption or that they have more than one aplication on that adoptee?
Just would like to know if common courtesy should apply to this.

Thank you for any answers you may have.

Male Akita

by

There is a male Akita, That I desperately wanted to adopt but because lack of space I can not. He is located at the Golden Valley Humane Society. He was a stray. He looks beautiful though. The only problem he has is a ear infection. Spent a great deal of time with him and he is very friendly and seems to have had a lot of interaction with people and possibly other dogs. He has no aggression towards other dogs, even when they bark at him. He is not neutered. And they believe he is 3-5 years old with sable chest and underbelly and dark face. Great Dog. He was available yesterday 9-5-01.

Your girl is not ready to be bred yet.

by

Please do not breed your female until you have completed the health checks necessary to promote the health and welfare of the akita breed. Breeders go to great lengths to produce dogs with minimal health risks and try not to pass on breed specific problems. If you have not done any OFA or CERF or other necessary certifications, she is not ready to produce a litter of pups.

A breeding involves research of specific lines and years of experience to choose the right stud or bitch. Reputable breeders do not "cast a net" for the first available male or bitch for breeding.

If you care for your dog and the welfare of this breed, please do some research and bring some serious forethought to your breeding program. There are tons of akitas in rescue or shelters that may not find a home because people did not want to care for these dogs for the 10-14 years they will live. Hang out at some shows or talk with other breeders about how they go about breeding their dogs. Waiting can only be good at this point. If your bitch is too young it could endanger her health as well.

I wish your girl good health and hope that you will reconsider your decision at this time. Take your time, it will only be worth it in the long run.

Its good that you know

by

But if you know, why have you not done the OFA and CERF certifications? It will help in determining the soundness of the litter as well as help identify if your bitch is a good candidate for producing a litter.

And, if you want to breed an above standard dog, have you contacted any of the owners/breeders that currently have above standard dogs?

I would also be interested in what the breeders have told you or offered in advice. Truely, I am interested in the welfare of this breed and hope that you are not producing a litter for monetary gain nor to witness the miracle of birth.

I am also not insinuating that you not breed but wish that you will consider the risks involved in not having your bitch certified in her health. The puppies could suffer in the long run.

As you know, I do not know you nor do I wish to offend you. I hope, that with your love of the breed and your dog, you will continue to be open to suggestions from more experienced breeders and would eventually come to see how important it is to do your homework prior to a breeding. I myself live in Houston and would welcome a dialogue with you via email. Feel free to email me privately if you wish to discuss breeding your dog on a more personal level.

about Cerf and OFA, but haven't done them. Does this mean you plan on breeding your bitch, but ARE NOT going to have her Cerf'd or OFA'd?

Hahaha!

by

This is really something! Setting up an internet breeding! Obviously a joke! I am w/JB 100%, you are not ready to take on the responsibilites of becoming a breeder, and the owner of the 20 month old stud is not ready yet either. 20 months is WAY to early to be considering breeding a stud dog. He CAN'T be OFA'd yet at that age just to begin with!

I feel your concern for your income that is

by

I see your lively hood threatened and you people keep searching for reasons why people shouldn't breed were just cutting out middle man/woman.

The internet can only help the breed. For one instance the genetic diversity if you breed with someone through un generic communications you have more of a chance of finding some one many more generations of separation than you do if it were threw regularly used channels..

Matthew...you haven't a clue about breeding so

by Andi

do way more research before you even begin to think about it.There are already far too many poorly bred Akitas in rescue and the humane society because someone thought it would be a good idea to breed their dogs. This breed has health problems you're probably not even aware of. Cerf'ing and OFA'ing breeding stock is just a beginning.

You're right Andi, and Mathew.....

by

Eyes and hips are just the two most commonly talked about problems in the breed. Matthew, are you aware of the health problems that are COMMON in this breed? Are you aware of the health problems in your bitches lines? If you say there aren't any, you are only fooling yourself. Have you had your bitches thyroid checked?
Are you going to require health clearances on the stud dog you decide on? If so, which ones? Will you breed your bitch to a stuck that may have the same problems in his line that your bitch may have in hers?
Are you going to give a health guarantee on the pups you sell? If for WHATEVER reason a future puppy buyer can't keep the pup you sold them ANYTIME down the road, will you take the puppy back?
Have you thought about any of these situations?

regarding the death of "Akitas by Denali's Q & A Forum"

by krater

i'm laughing myself quite silly at the problems MR FRED HAGARMAN seems to be having at his Q & A Forum. how long has it been now? a year yet? with the passing of it, the forum that I started is now the longest running akita forum on the web. good job, Khan. i'm proud of what this forum has become. even if the competition gets back on the web, this site will still keep the longest running akita forum title.

no one believed me when i told you that MR HAGARMAN was extremely rude to me when i asked that this forum be included in his webring. or that he said that he didnt want any competition. now who do you believe? i heard how he lied and schemed to his regular forum posters and it doesnt suprise me one bit. doesnt everyone wish now that you had believed me years ago when i told you what kind of webmaster he was?

and i wonder who it was that trashed MR HAGARMAN'S forum? could it be? no, it couldnt be!!!
i am SO enjoying myself lately.

Keep on

projecting those negative energies ~Krater~, because you get back what you put out. If you wake up one day and find your life unsatisfactory, you'll understand the reason ... For aught one knows, Mr. H. pegged your modus operandi?

At least Denali's had real people posting there

by

there, this nothing more then you and you and you, yes you may be putting in different names but that does not change the fact that it is you, and you and you.
So you sit there and enjoy yourself and feel real good about bringing down a forum that helped so many people.
You are an ass!

Working Akitas?

by

Does anyone know of any Akitas that have been used for hunting on a regular basis? It is a part of the history but is this history now lost? I was also wondering if any Akitas have been titled in any kind of protection sports like SchH or Ring or any other kind of work? I think that I have herd of one or maybe two Akitas that have been used for hunting or protection but are there any more? Thanx!

working akita

by

the akita does not take well to protection training. it is a natural protector though. shutzhund stuff is a sport. akitas are the real deal.

Perhaps

by

"Real deal"? Of the dozens upon dozens of akita owners with whom I've hitherto spoken not one, not ONE, has any evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) of what an akita would do when faced with an unfriendly intruder...besides barking of course. It's the same old story: "Well, if there were a real threat, I just KNOW my cutesy-wutesy would give his life to protect me." Wishful thinking? Probably. That's not to say, however, that a large barking dog doesn't provide a great deterrence.

And Schutzhund is indeed a sport which is only indicative of the SKILLS (but not neccesarily drives) neccesary for the stressful nature of police work or serious personal protection.

And...

by

that goes for hunting too. If people were hunting with akitas (or working them in anyway whatsoever) there would be bloodlines (SOMEWHERE ya'd think) which concentrates such behavioral prepotence.

Akitas can hardly be considered to be relative of these "hunting dogs" of yore. Since when does a dog have to look like a bear to hunt them? This is a modern phenomenon based on a cute phenotype. I appreciate them nonetheless. But let's get real.

And I'd like to see see ANYONE show me where they are being used as police dogs in Japan.

Re. Akitas as Working dogs

by Simba

Akitas never were hunting dogs and they are not "working dogs" in the traditional sense. They have a very strong prey instinct but they are not suited for hunting in the way most hunting dogs are used.

Akitas have a strong prey instinct (most noicably towards other dogs) as a result of the breeds history. This is a long lived-breed, several hunderd years old, and for all but the last 50 years or so the Akita was bred for pit fighting. This well documented but usually ignored fact is viewed as unsavory by much of the current dog world so you will often see the breed described as a "working dog" or a "hunting dog" or a "companion dog" etc.

The Akita has many desireable characteristics: strength, intelligence, bravery, loyalty, natural protection instinct etc, many of which are shared with other breeds which were bred as fighting dogs.

However, Akitas don't generally work well with other dogs, something required of a traditional hunting dog.

Black spots

by

My Rex has some black pigmentation in the mouth, although not specifically on the top of the tongue. I believe it's perfectly normal, unless the black spots are unusual in some way (ulcerated, raised, warty, etc). If they look strange in any other way then just color, talk to your vet. Otherwise it's nothing to worry about.

there in the spitz family like the chow

by

The spots come with the breed like a chow and the curled tail and other similar features. The history says that they were bread with german shepards to help revive the breed...
