Once again Richard, your help has been invaluable. I managed to fix my "overly-bright" ( brightness) problem with ease last night. Now its time to tune up the rest of the monitor.
I have two of these monitors. One is what is listed in the title and the other is a Dell version. The Dell is in immaculate condition with an excellent picture. After fixing up the brightness problem on the HP I've noticed that the brightness of everything else seems a little dim. To be more specific, I have both monitors plugged into the same video card. I'm using a black desktop background. The taskbar and icons on the Dell seem nice and bright and crisp. On the HP they are lacking in brightness ( and crispness ).
I can't put this intelligently into words but here goes. I imagine what I need is some kind of adjustment to " make it brighter where the monitor actually has something to display rather that in general ". Hope that makes sense.
Also, do you know where or how to manually set the RB&G convergences? They are a little out of whack too.
Also if anyone reading this has the schematics for the HP P1110 - Nokia 445N could you please email it to me?

And for those of you who have this monitor and are only interested in fixing the " washed-out " brightness problem here are some detailed instructions.
First flip the monitor upside down with the rear of it facing your stomach.
Notice a small hole near the center of the pivot on the swivel base. Turn it so the hole is "facing" your stomach. Now bring the whole swivel back towards your stomach. You should not be able to see though the hole now. Stick a punch into the hole. What you are doing is pushing a little tab down so you can pull the base all the ways towards yourself and off.
Now unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the monitor.
Place the monitor screen down and on a soft flat surface.
Get an assistant to help, although you can do this next step yourself. Get two micro flathead screwdrivers. Notice on both the right and left side of the monitor near the seam there are two little square indents. Have an assistant lift up on the back casing. Stick one of screwdrivers into this indent. The screwdriver should be small enough to slide right though. You'll hear a pop; that's the prong releasing. Now do this on the second indent. You'll hear another pop. Leave the screwdriver in and go over to the other side. Repeat the process for the last two remaining indents.
The case should now come right off.
Get a T10 torx bit screwdriver.
You'll notice that the magnetic shielding around the monitor is more or less in two pieces. Use the torx bit to remove all of the screws around the upper half.
Flip the monitor right-side-up and into the normal viewing position. The glass should be facing your stomach. Look to the back left side and you'll see the FBT ( flyback transformer). It's the big black thing that looks ominous. On the left side of the FBT you'll notice three Phillips screw knobs.
Align these 3 screws so they face your stomach. Plug the unit in and supply it with a video signal. Turn your background color to black but make sure you have some colored items on the desktop.
Using the monitors OSD on screen display set the brightness to around 30-35.
Using a shielded or plastic Phillips head screwdriver, turn the bottom-most screw to the left until the washed-out look goes away.
The middle screw seems to change the total horizontal convergence and the top screw adjusts the vertical convergence.
Re-assemble your monitor and you’re done!
Be very careful when you adjust your monitor with the casing off. (I had my fiancée stand by with a wooden chair to hit me if I got electrocuted )

Access to the service mode is as follows :
1) Push SELECT down (ie the down arrow)
2) While holding the SELECT down button, Power on the monitor
3) Release the button after the service menu has appeared.
Activate the service mode always in 79.976K/75Hz.

some days ago i posted some Questions about the 21" Hewlett Packard in differrent Monitor Repair forums. Since it took me a lot of time and to help people with the same problem, i decided to share and summarize my findings, here they are are:
Problem: HP Monitor P1110 must set to maximum Contrast & Minimum Brightness to get "only nearly" acceptable Screen Performance.
Solution: Some adjustments (Blacklevel, G2 & RGB Gain)in service mode must be done.
You have to register to download. Indeed, to do the adjustments, you don't need it, , i found out.
!! You have to bring the monitor to service mode following this instructions:
1.) Turn Monitor off
2.) Push Menu Button for 4s during switch on of the Monitor, release and push push again.
3.) Now you have to enter service password wich is 7711 !! (not 1177, like somewhere else posted)
4.) All adjustments can be done using the service menu.

I have searched the internet for service manuals for the HP P1110 (Nokia 445N) Monitor. Please email me these schematic/service manuals, as my monitor requires attention in the color adjustment. Unfortunatley these adjustments are done electronically. In some Nokia monitors you have to solder a wire link to enable factory alignment mode; adjustments are then done by the OSD. Some more recent models have a service mode which is entered by holding down the enter button whilst powering on the monitor. The OSD will ask for a password, enter 7711 using the + and - keys and press enter and it will display the service menu.
I don't have a service manual for your particular chassis but you could try the second method to see if that works first.

Hi you can enter the service mode on the type you have to connect the wire link to but without this link the values are not saved. I use a small crocodile clip as the link is made top to bottom on a pcb edge connector.

I can acess a service mode, where I can adjust VG2, RGB Gain & Black Level Cutoff folling this procedure:
1.) Turn Monitor off

Thanks alot guys. Your information has been invaluable. And thank you to those who emailed me the schematics. The service mode worked perfect, in fact this monitor now looks better than the other one. So do the Sony based monitors have this service mode deal also?

The bad news is that any adjustments to a Sony monitor other than what the user controls allow must be made either by using Sony DAS or by hacking the circuitry. Sonys have no service mode.

I have two computers sitting side by side. One has an onboard Geforce2MX video system and the other a GeforceFX 5800. If I plug this monitor into the MX version and set the power management (XP) the monitor eventually goes into power saving mode.
When I try this on the other machine all I get is a blacked out screen (to be specific, the electron gun is still firing but the display looks squashed in by about an inch (as if it were in a res. mode I hadn't set up yet) ).
Now if I download this program made by the guys at PowerStrip called EnergySaver, I can manually "test" the differnt types of power saving modes and it works fine, but no matter what I do I cannot get the power saving features to work under normal circumstances.
I always update my video drivers and have had this problem since day 1. Stangely enough when I had an ATI card installed it worked fine.
I'm thinking that perhaps the ATI drivers were a little more redundant than the NVidia ones, or maybe it's because the drivers for the MX system are also for the mainboard (it's a NForce2 board).
Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of something like this? Could it be a setting in the registry I can flip somewhere to change the way windows does powermanagement? A setting in the monitor like DDC that I can change?

I just verified that both machines are capable of turnung the Dell P1110 into power saving mode, but neither are capable of putting the HP P1110 (Nokia) into power saving mode.

”1Suspend mode is activated when vertical sync is cut by the video controller.
2Active off mode is activated when both vertical and horizontal sync are cut by the video controller.”
So, what you have to do is to go into the video card’s adjustments and make sure that you find and change
“Vertical sync.” from “Applications-controlled” to Video Card controlled “On”.
Hope that this helped a bit (a few years too late!!!).

Only thing i can complain about is HP:s service in Sweden..
They told me to buy a new monitor, "it's too expensive to repair, not worth it." My monitor just ran out of warranty (march 03) and they want me to buy another 1500$ monitor?!

I had just the same situation with repair of my P1110 in Poland, they proposed replacement for around 1200 Euros . Maybe it is a company policy to "sqezee more money from customers".

I was able to adjust the brightness of this monitor without going through all those hassle. All you need is a tiny philips screw driver, using a flash light. You can see the 3 pots of the flyback at the left hand side of the monitor. From there you can adjust the bightness and focus.

Hi the 3 pots on the flyback are 3 controls 2 for Focus and one for G2/screen this is for setting the bias point of the CRT once all other electrodes are at the correct level.
The G2/Screen will change the brightness level and is used to set the preset brightnesss once all the other conditions are met.
2 Focus controls are used one for H Focus & one for V Focus although they both affect the other to a greater or lesser extent.

Scott McBrady, thank you so very much sir. I was figthing this monitor for 2 days trying to figure it out, before I chanced upon your post in my long searches on Google. After causing cosmetic damage along the entire seam (twisting and prying with a screwdriver), I finally found and tried your method here. Pop, pop, pop, pop - the case slid right off. Now hopefully I will not get fried, as I try to find a bad component that's causing the image on my 445N to get squished at both sides; something about the S-correction circuit, and a bad solder connection. Thank you again. I'll probably put a tutorial on my website (www.jeff7.com) sometime in the future, with pictures of this thing.
Very helpful though, thank you. As I could not see inside the monitor, I was worried about pressing very hard on those latches, fearing they'd break. I didn't know they were so large.

I'm very impressed.
I just bought a HP-P1110 from a guy that was moving, and I really didn't know all the in's and out's of the P1110 I was buying.
The monitor works very well, however I do have a problem with it being too bright and it having a little too much red,
I am technical, so I want to get into it.
Now with your help I know how to remove the case.
So now all I need is the service manual, and or schematics.
Do you have any idea where I can get this information?

I think its very funny that a year and a half later when you type p1110 into a search engine this page is the number one result.
For those of you over the last year or so who have contacted my and I've sent you the schematics, I hope you've had good luck. For those of you who I couldn't send the files to (since I lost them about 8 months ago in a HD crash) sorry.
But for future requests, I've found the schematics again (both sets) and have them backed up on CD (for the Dell P1110 not the Nokia based one since you only need the service mode).

btw. Anyone know what could cause a Dell p1110 to have this problem? When ever it comes out of standby mode afters it's been there for about an hour, the screen expands out in relation to how much white is being displayed, and shrinks in when more black is displayed? Anything I can turn or tweak to fix this?

This tread has been so useful to me. I have both a Dell P1110 and a Nokia 445PRO. I change the resistor in the DELL with a 6.8M 1/2W and the brightness is just perfect now.
I opened up the Nokia and noticed that it's a totaly different layout. From reading this tread I assumed that the P1110 and 445N chassis were the same.
Am I missing something or is the R459 resistor located in another place on the 445PRO.

I need to find where is R459 resistor located. Replacing it seems to be my last resort as I already tried the other suggestions. Weird enough, on my monitor the FBT flyback transformer doesn't have the third screw -- G2/Screen, it has just the other two for the focus.
