Hi I have a sony e400 manufactured 1-2000 and I was wondering if this problem is the same as on the dell P1110 monitor. If so could someone direct me to the proper resistor to replace on this model.I do not have a schematic. Thanks for your help.

Hi, yes, this chassis is the same as the Dell P991. First of all try the colour restore in the OSD menu (in colour or options) this should clear it up. If not, there is a 22Mohm resistor in the top right of the video board that may have gone high in value. May be difficult to check as some DVM's will not go that high. If its OK, you need to lower this resistor to drop the brightness. A 15Mohm and 2.2Mohm in series seems to work OK.

Thanks for the reply.I left the monitor run for about 45 minutes and did not see any color restore option appear.Maybe this unit does not have that option.I started dissasembling the monitor and found a 22m ohm resistor in that location labeled r053.Is this a special high voltage resistor?
Looks like I will have to desolder a large heat shield in order to remove it and test it.If I am going that far I may as well pick up some replacement units before I begin. You recommend 2 resistors in series so the total needed resistance is 17.2m ohm?

Hmm, strange that the Sony branded version does not have a colour restore feature. The resistor should be able to handle 1000V and rated at 1W, two in series of 17.2 Mohms works OK but it depends on how bad the problem is. You will have to experiment with resistor values but don't go below 15 meg ohms.

Thank you very very much for your help. The resistor in the monitor was only 1/4 watt and my local supply store only had 1/2 watt in stock so I want with 1/2 watt and decided to start at 15m ohms because the problem was really bad.
I am running brightness at 60 and the contrast at 95 and the picture looks great. No excessive brightness or retrace lines and the black does not look grey anymore.
Hopefully I will get a few more years out of it now instead of sending it to the scrap heap.
THANKS!

Found you post...is there any way to fix this problem without opening the unit and doing what you did? Basically, I see slighly angled horizontal lines on the screen, and the black is actually bluish grey. Even with the brightness set down to 0, it's still to bright. Anyway to fix this? I did the color restore from the monitor controls, but that didn't work.

You will have to do the resistor mod to fix the excessive brightness but as for the blue tint, if colour restore didn't clear this, its possible the CRT is defective. Of course, it may be a failure in the video circuit but from my experience, its always the CRT in this chassis.

My monitor has the excessive brightness problem with the retrace lines. G2 voltage should be 615 volts but was 663 instead. Did a little troubleshooting and found Q006 was open. The base voltage was climbing >1.5 volts. Replaced Q006. This circuit appears to give G2 a boost for many seconds when the monitor first turns on – probably while the filament is coming up to full heat. With Q006 replaced, G2 started at 663 and then drops to 642 when Q006 comes on. The retrace lines disappeared but still too bright. Next, I noticed IC001 pin 29 should be 2.2 volts but mine was 2.36 Volts. This is what was causing G2 to be too high. Verified this through calculations. Decided to change R040 from 2.2 M to 4 M. Actually R029, R099 and R040 should all be scaled but my resistor selection is limited – so I used 4 x 1 M resistors in series. I could have gone to 5 M since the brightness is at the bottom of the adjustment range - but it is back together now. I think scaling R053 as some other posts recommends yields the same effect. My kids tell me the monitor had good brightness range when it was new. So what caused pin 29 to go high? That seems to be the root of the problem.

HI
I have a sony 200sx that is missing the 15pin vga connector of the end of the cable. Any idea what wires are what and how to connect up another 15pin plug. I have another generic vga cable to play with. Thanks for the help please send the info to the email address Kalakaua91@hotmail.com and thanks either way
