My white, deaf, cute pitbull puppy jumped on the kitchen table (innocently for a snack) and my laptop landed on the ground. Now the bottom half of the screen is garbled fuzz. It is a less than one year old Compaq 2175. I call compaq, of course got a nimrod "tech support" person who is answering from Pakistan, and could care less about actually being helpful, and they told me that this is not covered by warrrenty, they cannot give me an idea of how long, how much$$. They also could not tell me how to retrieve my files before I sent it out. My question is... can I hook a peripheral moniter up to my laptop, and somehow retriev my files before I send it out for repair?

If your laptop has a standard 3 row 15W connector on the rear then you can connect a standard monitor to it.

If you have to pay for the repair then I would expect about £400 minimum at Compaq I know that they quoted me £640 for a replacement lid assy for a failed backlight inverter as they do not sell the inverter as a spare.

thanks. I was told by HP when this happened a few years back that a new moniter would cost about $900 (which is approx what I paid for the laptop).
