How to buy a used monitor?

I'm contemplating buying a used crt trinitron monitor from the local classifieds. Suppose I have a few minutes to examine the monitor with it plugged into a system. What should I do?
I assume I'd want to at least crank it up to the max resolution and refresh rate, assuming that the system it's plugged into can go up that far. I think I can take my laptop with me in case there's no computer to plug the monitor into, but my laptop's graphics can't do high resolutions.
Anything else? Turn it on off, degauss etc.?
I'm asking because my big trinitron went out, and for about 6 months it couldn't display high resolutions/refresh rates until it finally crapped out. Obviously, I don't want to replace one lemon with another...
