My Dell 991 (19") will not display a screen - it only makes small, continuous chirping noises when powered on. Alas, it is out of warranty but I am considering repairing it myself.
Any suggestions on the parts needed?
Thanks a lot!

My Dell ultrascan P991 (trinitron by Sony)does the same thing -- constant chirping or clicking, like a clock. The screen is black. This is obviously a relay (maybe in the degaussing function?).
Is there a way to stop the loop, or is it a component failure?

This mode is commonly found in Sony monitors and warms up the CRT in
preparation for the technician to perform color temperature adjustments.
By pressing a series of front panel buttons (different for each model), this
mode can be activated. The CPU detects this button combination and
places a DC bias on the CRT cathodes to produce a white screen. The
procedure in the CPD-G400 is as follows:
1. Disconnect the video cable from the computer or shut off the computer
so there is no sync input the monitor.
2. Press the monitor switch in. A no video-input message will appear on
the screen when the CRT warms up.
3. Move the ball type control button to the left and hold it there for two
seconds. This must be done before the monitor goes into the Active
Off Low Power Mode (two minutes after power ON).
4. The entire screen will turn white and the power indicator will alternately
blink green and orange. This is the aging mode.
5. The monitor will exit from the aging mode if:
• The control button is moved to the right and held for two seconds.
• Input sync is detected (computer turned on).
• The input switch is changed.
• The power button is pressed again (off).

Wayne, Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping maybe you can help me decide whether my malfunctioning monitor is worth repairing. (it's a P992, not a P991) When the power button is pushed, a rhythmic chirp sound starts and it's in synch with the flashing LED. It blinks green/amber/green/amber in .5 second intervals and NO video ever appears on the screen, not what I might expect for the aging/selftest scenario. The chirp sounds during the green led cycle. Hope that's enough info to hazard a guess! Thanks in advance!

Are you sure it blinks green/amber/green/amber? This is not listed as a diagnostic mode, but amber/green as per previous post is listed. Are you sure that green is the first indication, and not amber. Check your mail.
