Connector Problem

Hi, I am novice at best to the realm of repairing monitors, so I just need some straight forward simple answers. ;p
I have a micron monitor (I can find model number if needed)
It seems to me that the connector itself is still in-tack, but the cylinder part right above the connector about 1" seems to be shorting-out. I have excluded the video card by using other cards, and the connector itself by "wiggling it" and nothing happens
In various positions the video will turn from normal to a darker purplish screen, but no distortion, blinking, sounds ect just different color. This will occur in any resolution and/or refresh rate.
1:
I have a cord and connector from a slightly older model but I count only 11 wires and 14 pins what is the deal? I Looked at a schematic at:
http://www.zytrax.com/tech/pc/monitors.htm and have concluded that I am using a DB15 Format; I count only 2 pins (9 and 15) with no use and one that seems to be for serial use (pin12). That still leaves 12 wires…where is the missing wire?
2:
What is the use of the cylinder part above the connector, does it splice one wire into two or is it simply to keep the wires crimped to protect the connector or both?
Responses would be much appreciated
Thanks

This is a ferrite core used to stop rf radiation from the PC or monitor depending on which end of the cable it is, some have one each end.

The main cables you need are.

1 Red inner (signal)
2 Green Inner (signal)
3 Blue inner (signal)
4
5 This pin is used by some monitors for connection detect
6 Red outer (Gnd)
7 Green Outer (Gnd)
8 Blue Outer (Gnd)
9 N/C
10 Digital Gnd
11 N/C
12
13 H Sync
14 V Sync
15

12 & 15 are DDC (Digital Data Channel) used by the plug and play of Windows so that the correct monitor resolution and frequency are enabled, you can select this manually in Windows

12 DDC SDA
15 DDC SCL
