I have a Sony HMD-A400 monitor that I've been using for probably close to two years now with no problems. About 4 or 5 months ago somehow a pin got bent on the data connector and when attempting to bend it back, it busted off. The pin is listed in the manual as being ID (Ground) and is pin 11. I plugged the cable back in and it still worked with no problems for about 3 months or so. About a month ago I started getting a problem where I would be doing something and the monitor would randomly kick into powersave mode in which the power LED would flash yellow. Simply turning the power off and back on would remedy this problem. It only happend once every 8 days, so it wasn't of a whole lot of concern. Within the last week this has been occuring more and more frequently. Today it had a horrible bout in which the monitor lost complete focus for about 5 seconds, then came back into focus, then went into powersave mode. As of late, simply turning it off then on rarely helps and I often have to unplug the monitor cable from the video card, turn it off for a minute or so, then plug everything back in and turn it back on. I've contacted sony tech support about this and they've been little help. They've told me the obvious things such as checking display drivers, refresh rates, etc but none made a difference. I have a friend with a similar setup to me and we have the exact same monitor and video card. I've run this monitor on this video card for a few months before the problem started happening, so I'm not worried that the video card is at fault. He had the exact same problems I have had with this monitor. He got his a few months earlier than me, and his monitor started having the problems a month or so before mine did as well. His ended up getting so bad that he bought a new Viewsonic monitor which solved the problem. I'd rather not go that route if I must as I couldn't afford to buy another monitor at the moment.
The monitor has its problems in spurts of about 5 minutes in which it will keep acting up, and then be fine again for a while which has made it tough for me to recreate the problem when hooked up to another computer.
I am moderately savvy with electronics and pretty good at soldering if that would be a path I would need to take to fix this. I'm also enrolled in a computer repair course so I would be able to get help from my instructor if need be. I asked him what his thoughts were on it, and he couldn't think of anything that stood out that would cause this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
