A Technician's Opinion on a KDS monitor

Hi - a little background information about this monitor first...

I purchased a KDS 19inch EVOKD-1900 for $30 cdn from a friend. He kept it in storage for a while.

Two days after taking it out of it's storage box and selling it to me, the image would start to "blip". These blips could be described as little distortion lines along the horizontal axis. They would appear for 5 minutes after powering on the monitor. When a blip occured, a slight 'crack' could be heard at the back of the monitor.

Then two days ago I switched the resolution from 1078 x 768 to 800 x 600, and "FIZZZZZZZZ" the image suddenly got very "out of focus" or "fuzzy". The time it took me to think "What the He..." the image dissapeared collapsed upon itself... and now I am graced with a black screen. Doing some research on the forums suggests it could be the flyback.

*

Oh, and it also had that "image gets bigger with white desktop... smaller on black desktop" problem.

My question is... is it worth it to attempt to salvage or repair this monitor? If so, why? I only have crude technical skills (soldering, smelling, etc) so I'd have to send it to get repaired. If I have it repaired, will it still last a while?

Any comments would be a huge help!! Thanks a lot

The repair will cost more than your $30 so unless you can do it your self I would bin it.

In the UK I can get 2nd user 19" under 2 years old for $80 with a warranty.

KDS monitor woes

GuiguiBaah,

Is there any chance that you KDS monitor is still under warranty?

If it's a CRT, they usually carry a 3 year warranty.

If you're not sure how old the monitor is, there is probably a label on the back with a "Date of Manufacture", or call KDS Tech Support (800-283-1311), give them the serial number, and they can determine the warranty status.

Here's the web page for KDS's Warranty Information:
http://www.kdsusa.com/supports/warrantyInfo.asp

The company that I work for had bought a number of KDS monitors, and I've had to have several of them replaced while under warranty. KDS Tech Support and Customer Support are very easy to work with.

If your monitor is indeed still under warranty, you can probably get it replaced for the cost of shipping the broken unit back to KDS. KDS will then send you a new or refurbished monitor of the same or equivalent model.

Hope this helps.

... Thanks for the replies. However I failed to mention that, no, the monitor is no longer under warranty - it being build in 1999 and all.

I imagine it would cost an upwards of $100 to have it serviced, and after that, I would still have no warranty.

The again, some used 19" go for around 150$ where I live... I ponder whether having it repaired will render it good as new, or if it would be like giving a terminally ill person a facelift...

thanks!

Ive fixed a KDS with a problem kind of like that. The main switching device for the EHT was short circuit and needed replacing. If u want to do a quick check on it (in circuit) u need to use a multimeter and do a continuity test between the collector of the big EHT switching transistor and ground (or between the emitter and collector pins). The component has 3 pins, is near the flyback mounted on a large heatsink and is probably the largest transistor on the board. If the collector is showing a short to ground then take the component out and test for a short between the emitter and collector legs. If it tests ok then it maybe that the flyback is shorted. Paying someone to fix it will cost to much to bother about.
Its a long shot but worth a try.
