NEC FE1250 picture loss

My NEC FFE2150 has, over a period of a few months, been losing its picture into a thin horizontal band running through the centre of the screen.
It normally starts OK and then after a variable period, (anywhere from 30mins to a week) the picture disappears.
Finances don't permit a shop repair and here in Portugal it is difficult to find anyone to deal with it anyway. Can anybody offer advice on where and how to trace the fault. I have reasonable soldering skills but not many tools or much experience inside monitors.
