Gateway Monitor Backlight issue

Hi,

I have a 17" Gateway LCD monitor. I posted about this a while ago but didn't properly explain what was happening.

For some reason, when I turn it on, it will flash the image that the video card sends to it, but then the backlight turns off. The power is still on, though, which is strange. I opened it up and fastened all of the connections and this continues to happen. The image is still there, however, the backlight is off, and this the image is hardly visible.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

-Steve

This is the most common TFT failure, backlight not working due to inverter or lamp's.

Robert,

Is this an easily solved problem? Is it expensive?

Is it something I could fix with general technical knowledge, or should it be repaired professionally?

Or lastly, is this something not worth repairing? Should I throw it away?

Thanks,
-Steve

17" are around the £100 to £150 in the UK so worth looking at but having parts like replacement lamps is a must to decide which is causing the problem.

I fix these alot working on laptops. Most of the time the inverter is the problem. What is the model number, maybe I can find someone who has it for you. JIM

Looking here will be your best bet,http://cgi.ebay.com/DAMAGED-Gateway-FPD1730-17-inch-LCD-Flat-Panel-Monitor_W0QQitemZ8754011000QQcategoryZ29502QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Places I found that have the Inverter want $100 for it. A damaged complete LCD off Ebay can be had for $25-$45 dollars.

Jim,

Thank you for the good advice.

Will it be difficult to substitute the backlight from another monitor?

How do I know where the backlight is in the device?

Thanks again,

-Steve

Here is a site that sells just the bulbs and shows you how to install them. If your LCD is not too old, it is most likely the inverter. Jim
