CRT Display problem

A few days ago for no apparent reason my monitor's screen went very dark and hasn't gone back to it's original appearance. I use a screensaver so I do not think it is burn-in. Howeber I have tried to degauss it many times and it still has not gone back to normal. This dark screen is very irritating and makes it difficult to view pictures and text. Any suggestions on what I should do?

remove your sunglasses, joke!
if you can access flyback, big black thing with thick wire connected to crt, there are adjustment knobs (usually 2, one on top of another) labeled focus & screen. turn the screen knob with screwdriver clockwise
