Kind of on the same topic...I grew up believing the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's guaranteed equal education for all. But that never happened. The middle class whites refuse to send their kids to school with "undesireables". Also, the schools in low-income neighborhoods receive less funding per pupil.

I saw all this firsthand when I lived in a historic district undergoing gentrification. My block was filled with yuppies. Out of 17 kids on my block, only my kids attended the local school. All the white urban professionals there came up with excuses to send their kids "uptown". And the schools allowed them to. The principal even denied it was happening. So, the neighborhood school had a large percentage of minorities, low income and/or transient families. Now the city has decided to close that school, due to finances and low scores on tests required under No Child Left Behind (a Republican bill).
