I've got a '78 F-150 with a 400. It sat in the garage for 5 years then came out of storage for paint. I drove it 25 miles home after filling the tank and had fuel starvation symptoms: surging, rough idle, ect. I had a kit so I cleaned and rebuilt the carb fearing the inlet needle, ect. would be gummed-up from sitting. I did the carb and it would run fine now until it emptied the float bowl, then die. I replaced all the filters and the fuel pump after finding no pressure.
I'm getting way too much gas now. I've flooded the pass. side of the intake to where when I open the butterflies I can look down and see the gas in the intake! Any ideas? I'm new to carbs and would appreciate the advice.
My second question is how are the idle air seedles adjusted? I noted that after I pulled the carb the screws were both out 6.5 turns from seated (enough to where the springs on the adjustment screws exerted no tension). After reassembleing the carb I set these back where they were. I'm suspicious that this may be wrong and perhaps part of my problem since the leaflet that came with the carb kit recommended backing out only 1.2-2 turns?
Thanks in advance!
