Hello. First post here, and please forgive any newbie dumb questions.

I have a Ford C4AF DJ fitted to a 427FE which is in a Cobra replica that I recently acquired.
Last night after accelerating strong enough that the vacuum secondary kicked in, the engine started to stutter and wanted to stall. I was able to nurse it the couple of miles home by keeping the revs up, but as soon as I pulled into my driveway it stalled and would not restart. This morning, after spinning over a few times it started ok and is responsive to throttle input.

I'm pretty sure it's a fuel problem but I'm not familiar with this carburetor. I've posted some pictures of it to photobucket (yes, it's a leaker and needs an overhaul) but the first thing I'm not sure about is the choke baffle. It will just stay in any position it's put. Should it be spring loaded so that it returns to some optimal position? In the second and third pictures you can see a lever, but there's nothing attached to it.

I appreciate any advice.
