Sounds like you are on the right track, you say you tried another carb and it ran much better? You are now getting some adjustment out of your old carbs idle mixture screws?

Perhaps there is still some dirt in the old carb but I would take a good look at the bench setting and make sure they are correct, Remember to bench set to the carb not the car, also take a good hard look at your old carbs choke assembly, perhaps that is where your problems are coming from, years of not running a tube from the manifold might have left debris in thos channels that is hard to clean out and is effecting the proper movement of the choke adjustments.
