and it took me 2 summers to stumble onto to the problem with the Edelbrock Performer with a 1" factory PCV spacer and a 4160 Holley. This was for a boat motor so I did not run it every day.
The Edelbrock carb mounting pad is a full one inch narrower than the OEM spacer and the 4100 or 4160 base footprint. The short story is that my problems were due to a gross vacumm leak once the motor warmed up. The heavy spacer/mani gasket would drop, letting air up into the bottom of the open webbed OEM spacer.
I remedied the situation by turning the spacer upside down. The, now webbed top, sealed to the bottom of the carb and the previous solid top of the spacer could now overhang the intake pad without a leak.
If I had it to do over again I would get a Weiand Stealth intake. It has a full width mounting pad and a wider (idle to 6??? rpm) torque band.
