Response to 1966 289 4V Help needed trouble shooting and dialing in carb, mixture, ignition

Look for the carb number on the left front "foot", near the manifold mounting hole, and post that number. (it'll start with C4xx-x or C5xx-x...IF it's from a Mustang) Some of us have factory shop manuals which contain the factory specs listed by that carb number. A rough guess is that you could try to "spec" your carb as if the engine were a 289 HiPo. Those engines had a slight "lump" to them, so without knowing your cam specs, I think the HiPo carb settings might get you closer than you are. Those jet #s look pretty whacky to me, especially the primaries. (52F and 68F are used with one of the HiPo engines in 1965, for instance) I've never seen such a lean jet used on the pri. side...you sure they aren't 48F's? Also, you need to do the dist. advance checks with the vacuum advance disconnected at both low AND high RPM. IF you ran the high speed test with no load, and w/vacuum advance, you should have seen at least 50 degrees of combined advance.
You could take the top off the carb, remove the booster assemblies, and report the number stamped into the undersde of them. Various boosters were used thoughout the years, so we want to see if your carb is still "matched".
