Howdy. New to this Forum. Just got a 64 1/2 vert and it has the 260V8 with a 2100 carb. Looks like the carb is not original, but an out of a box refurb. Has 1.02 on the side stamp.

Took it apart and the accel pump is strange to me. No 'elastomer' valve connecting to the bowl. It has two humps on the carb body with orifices going to each venturi. There is a small hole above this casting going into the carb bowl. A large screw is on the top that apears to do absolutely nothing. It screws in vertically into the accel pump cavity and just bottoms out(?). I'm thinking this is a pre 64 carb.

Seems to me when the pump is activated, it would just push gas back into the bowl through the top hole and not throught the passages to the venturis.

All literature and web sites for rebuilding do not show my configuration and 99% show the 'flat' type well with the elastomer valve. Is there some other check valve for these older carbs???

Any ideas on what I have here? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

is indeed a early 2100, pre 1964 to be exact.
In 1964 they went from this style to the elastomer valve, not to worry these are still good carbs and function great. Incidently that screw that comes in from the top does do something other than just bottom out, two things in fact, it holds a BB stainless check ball as the main thing and it also holds a phenolic spacer that takes up the space in that cavity. The check valve is a must however most of these carbs now-a-days are missing the phenolic spacer and its not a problem.

So this gets rebuilt just a bit different than the elastomer type, obviously you are not going to use the elastomer valve, install the new check valve from the top of the screw hole and install the screw using a gasket (if you have the spacer it has to be installed before the screw), the spring goes with the narrow end engaged against the three little bosses, then install the diagphram and the cover.

The reason Ford did this modification is it cost less to do the elastomer valve carb than this style, strictly a bean counter modification, as both styles work great. Originally Ford said it was because the elastomer pump system was better but both are excellent, and I have never seen where the check valve style has caused any undo problems.

Incidently what is the part number of your carb? It should be on the drivers side front foot embossed into the foot.

I think the kit I have has only one BB and it is the one that goes under the rod below the venturi booster assembly. Two questions.

1) If the BB under the booster is a check valve, why would you need another in the accel pump cavity?

2)The hole at the top of the pump cavity going to the bowl is always open? You do get some accel pump squirt with that hol open, but if you put your finger over it you get a really nice shot. Obviously, you must uncover it to fill the pump housing back up. Just wondering.

Guess I may need to get the correct kit, or maybe I can use the old BB in the accell pump if they are the same diameter. Do you know?

Thanks a ton.

Your question is a good one about both check valves in the cavity and then under the venturi, I have never messed with not including them, just always done it. In theory I don't know why you would need both since they appear to both do the same job. Let me look into that one.

But the bottom line is both balls are the exact smae size.

The B'ham, what does that stand for????
Birmingham or Bellingham??????

Bill, that is Birmingham, AL

I am a Corvair guy, not a Ford guy. I am doing a friend's carb on his Mustang. Have it back together...used the old BB in the accel pump. Seems to work fine. As you know, carbs seem to get all mixed up over the years. This carb is a mish-mash of stuff and missing parts. Thanks for your help.

Corvairs did not get a 'power circuit' on the Rochester HV until '64. Looks like the 2100 had it back in '58 or so. Interesting.

Check out the pic...4 carbs...2 primaries and two secondaries. A mess of carburation!

See ya.

I am about 15 miles from Bellingham washington, and they nickname theirs B'ham as well.

Yes those corvairs are something, I have a bud who used to be big into them. His pride and joy was a rampside pickup, of which they only made a few in ralation to the others.

Without the whole number it would be a lot harder to figure it our, given the venturi and some design changes. jetting and booster number I might be able to figue it out with time.

Good Luck,
