Hi Bill, Thanks for getting rid of those ##%&@op-ups!

Bill, I bought a 4100 at a swap meet and I was wondering if you could help me ID it? IT came on a Y-Block manifold and for the life of me it looked as though it was a matching set! The man had several other Y-Block four barrel manifolds and none of them had the same configuration as this one. You know they looked as though they were smaller and for those old "Teapot Holleys".He claimed it came off of an old farm truck of his dads. This one had what appeared to be the correct heat riser also. When I took the carb off of the manifold for a look see it was apparent that the carb and manifold were a perfect match for bolt pattern and bores. The carb did not have an ID tag, naturally, but the numbering on the left foot is 6P and I can't read the rest. Also, it is a 1.08 venturi. What is the P designation? OH by the way I bought the manifold too because I couldn't bring myself to split it up since I was,am, convinced it is a set! As always THANK YOU for your time and expertise
Regards Tom S.

Not an original set-up.

The carburetor is a 6P which stands for 1966 replacement carb, this particular carb was original factory replacement carb for all 4100's from 1966 up through the 80's. Originally is was based off of an 1966 fairlane 390 california emmission carb. I guess the original thinking was how middle of the road could they go for an all around factory replacement. So a mid size FE with the 108 (california emmissions comes about as close as you can get.

So how did it end up on the old Y-block?? Well in 1957 through 1959 the Y block came stock with the 4100 carburetor, both in full size cars and the edsel, plus they also cam equiped with the Holley which has the same carb pattern from 1956-1963/4. I would have to go thru my truck stuff for confirmation on that but probably the most reasonable explanation would be a engine swap or manifold swap onto another truck Y block. Then sometime after 1966 it probably got taken to a ford dealership for carb work and ended up getting the factory replacement.

Hope that helps,

Bill White
