I just picked up a Ford C4AF-R 4100 carburetor that looks that it may have never been apart. It has the brass floats and the little "dams" that limits flow to the rear of the carburetor. I also have a parts carb with the black plastic looking floats. I was wondering if I should use the brass floats or the plastic looking ones? Also, should I remove the "dams" and allow better flow to the rear? What is the purpose of these "dams"?

Thanks;
Gregg

.......plastic floats are the replacement for the brass ones. You can still get these from Ford yet.

As far as the brass dams go, they are there to restric the flow from the balance slot in the carb.

I've ran carbs without these with no apparent problems.

I tend to reuse brass floats but only after a leak test, as they tend to spring leaks.

The brass dams...

are supposed to prevent flooding/starving upon heavy braking/accelerating. I ended up making some from thin brass plate/shim material...ACE hardware.

I'm going to take it apart and soak it in Berryman's for a couple of days and put a kit in it.

When you get the top off, can you take a picture of the dams in place and post it here?

You need to upload the picture to PhotoBucket(free registration) then copy the URL link to the picture, then make two of the following in the in this message box; [img], then copy the link in between the two of them.

[img][linked image][img]

After you sign up in Photobucket and before you 'upload' the picture from your harddrive, be sure to select 640x480 in the 'reduce to' box at the bottom of the 'upload' box. Otherwise the picture will be too big for the computer screen and cause one to have to scroll up and across to see the whole picture.

Thanks, but they are too small to see the detail. Nice '64 Galaxie though!

Sorry;
Everytime I try to resize the photos they wind up being saved at 120 x 160, but I was able to crop and expand the image of the dam.
