We will...

August 25 2009, 1:02 PM

Thanks Regan. We will of course consider them in our prayeres. The last bit of news that I have received is that all is stabilized for Sr. Hanning as of now. A couple days stay in the hospital will be needed and then as I understand it, she will return home. It is comforting to see God's watch care for His children! God Bless,
Bro. Harold

whew!

God is good!

Yesterday I almost lost my wife of thirty years very good years at that. She called me from work (at the hospital) crying, that they were admitting her and wouldnt let her go home. Could I come? Could I come! Well, off I went. She was in a room with an IV in tact and hooked to a heart monitor. Some blood was missing with no evidence as to where it had gone. Internal bleeding for sure. They had already ordered 4 whole units of blood. Well, really at that point they had tested and cross checked her blood, typed it, etc., and she has some peculiar characteristics in her blood so it took a little while to locate a lot that would work. The blood was being transported Im still not sure where it came from exactly, but Im assuming one of the Columbus hospitals.

This process began at 10:00 a.m. where she became dizzy and could not stand she was short of breath and her blood pressure was very low (obviously). And her blood pressure is generally very high. Her pulse was accelerated to 120 or so and was rushing. The blood was typed and ordered around 11:00 a.m. and showed up at the hospital at 4:00 p.m. They started an infusion drip and said it would take approx. 3 hours per unit for the infusion. In the meantime they took her in to the O.R. to scope out her digestive tract to look for the culprit. If this did not find it the morning would see her back there checking out the other end.

Once the scope reached the stomach her doctor (this is the guy she works for) knew she was a girl in trouble. She had lost so much blood and her stomach was completely full of it. They began to suction it out and revealed the culprit right away an ulcer just inside the esophagus had eaten through the stomach lining and had also ruptured the main artery supplying the stomach with blood. Each beat of her accelerated heart sent a gush of blood into her already full stomach. It is amazing what technology we have in our human hands.

They inserted a tool through the tube that also carried the camera and the ability to remove the blood, and clamped the artery They then stopped the blood infusion and with an arterial pump quickly pumped 3 units of blood into one of her other arteries. Then they cauterized the busted artery in her stomach and sent her back to her room to recover. She did quickly come about and started pinking up right away. She instantly began to think clearer and it was clear she was somewhat out of the woods.

The good doc explained to us all how close the call had been and that she was not out of danger. Since the stomach houses all of the initial digestive fluids, he feared that an influx of gastric juices might eat away at the newly cauterized artery. She is a long time acid reflux patient who has had previous surgeries. Part of her problem is the production of excess gastric fluids. The hospital where she works has no trauma team available to watch such a problem after regular business hours this is really just a clinic now. He was afraid that if she began bleeding through the night she could bleed to death before they could get her transported to a place that could help.

We do not (for good reason and past history) trust the other local hospital, so we had she transported to one in a larger city, who recently saved the lives of two other brethren in our class for which we are greatful God has certainly blessed these folks. She arrived about 8:30 p.m. and they began to run all the necessary tests Her hemoglobin count at 10:00 am was 6. Normal is 14-16. At the great point of danger during her scope it was probably 3-4. When she arrived at her new location she was near 9. Today she was 9.5, and we expect this to improve over time the next two days or so. She is on a continuous Nexium drip through her IV and this is the thing that is working. She was giving nothing to eat or drink (not even a drop of water) for the first 16 hours. Now she has water, ice, broth and Jell-o She should be back on solid food soon, but it is important at this stage to not incite the stomach to produce its normal fluids for digestion so that she does not digest her ailing artery.

Thanks for your prayers and cares. If youre just hearing about this, thanks for the prayers you would have given if you would have known. I operated on the fly and sent out a quick note to two or three folks from work and ran for the hospital. Your prayers and thoughts have been felt God bless from all of our family

sleepless in Seattle; thankful in Ohio

Mrs' Hanning's last blood tests reveal her hemoglobin levels are back to normal. We'll have an internal check by spy camera next week to make sure all is well in the gestational-kingdom. All prayers and thoughts were appreciated.
