Let us show our gratitude to the 'greatest music maestro' of this century. Let us use this forum to show how much we respect & adore & thank him for what he has provided us with all these golden years. Whoever reads this, just post a message thanking the maestro and then just indicate one song for which you want to thank him. Let us overwhelm our raga-devan with genuine gratitude..Remember,we have all grown up with his music - can't we spend a few seconds to repay our gratitude?

Ok then let me start the mega thanks-giving exercise ..

"Dear Maestro.. Thanks for what you have given us all these years. Thanks in advance for what we would be recieving from you in the future. Thanks specially for the divine song 'janani janani' of thai moogambigai. We love you"

Dear Raja,

March 27 2001, 8:37 AM

I have never attained soulfulness in any other music. I got it from u.

In my school days i used to hum so many tamil songs but i dunno from whom it came out. As i grow up, i came to know that 99% of those songs which i sung in my earlier days were given by none other than Maestro. Later i myself started liking the continuity in the songs and the instruments that have been used by Maestro

FYI, now-a-days i used to hear only Maestro's songs. My mind is not accepting other music, I dunno why. So u can say i am mad of Raja. I am proud by being called so. Daily i used to visit this site by expecting more and more news abt Maestro and his music. I want to do something for him. I am eagerly waiting for his call to do good things.

Few samples of the songs which attracted me toward raja are:

1) Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiraan from Kavikkuyil
2) Kannamma Kaadhal Enum Kavithai Solladi from Vanna Vanna Pookkall
3) Ennai Thottu Allikonda from Unnai Nenachaen Paattu Padichaen
4) Maalayil Yaaro Manadhodu (I love this songs very very much) from Shathriyan
5) Ennullae Ennullae from Valli
6) Unnai Naanarivaen from Guna
7) All the songs from Panneer Pushpangall.
8) All the songs from Jhonny
and ...

I feel great and proud to live in the Era of Raaja.

With Love,
Somasundaram

Music for the disheartened soul

March 27 2001, 6:32 PM

Rajas music is my constant companion in life. When I'm sad and depressed it is his music that motivates me and fills me with joy. Among several others the song that touched me most is Ethilum ingu from Bharati.

Maestro Ilayaraaja's music has been with me throughout my life, helping me out in bad times, and makes me enjoy and feel happy....what not. Infact, I live with it, and it is part of me.

I really feel proud to be living during the time period when Maestro Ilayaraaja has lived.

As Maestro said "Amma vin saapdu mathiri", After listning/living with it, how can you think about FAST FOOD ?

I hope Maestro gets due attention around the world for his musical talents. Naam Petra Enbam perukka ivayagam.

Thanks for starting a thread like this, so that Maestro fans can pour there thoughts, feeling about Maestro and his music.

Maestro is one of my biggest inspirations...

It's like when ever I don't give all that I have to whatever I am doing, I get reminded of Maestro. To think that, for a song we spend weeks and months analysing, researching and listening - he as produced it on paper in 5 minutes - just shows the intensity and passion with which he lives. This alone is enough inspiration for me.

To top this are the thousands of gems that he has produced. I can only feel deeply grateful...

I also hope he doesn't stop composing for a long time to come... There will definitely be something missing in my life without his music...

Senthil, it's impossible to name just one song from his compositions. But the song that instantly moved me to tears was 'Anburuvum Aravuruvum...' from Housefull.

Veterans too are baffled

March 28 2001, 10:52 PM

Dear Ilaiyaraja,

You have a special talent to please " the ordinary and music experts alike." Given below are a few samples of what veteran personalities had to say about you.

(source - book titled -'gnana viththu' by v.selvaraj)

1)Semangudi srinivasa ayyar - " Raja has that unique gift to please common man and carnatic experts alike. "

2)Lary Bain( England Based Composer)-"He is unbelievable, genius and fantastic"

3)Lalgudi Jayaraman - " His talent is not the fruit of one single birth's efforts. This level of achievement is only possible to one who has lived with music for countless births. The speed with which he writes notations have always baffled me "

4)Dr.Balamuralikrishna -" As far as i am concerned, i would say Ilaiyaraja is the composer of the century. If there is one single authority on 'orchestration' it can only be ilaiyaraja.

5)K.J.Yesudass - "There is infinite music forms that is hidden in this man's heart. All that should flow-out for the good of mankind."

6)Kavignar Vaali - " Reethigowlai, Hamsanatham, Bilahari etc are some of the ragas that he has deftly handled for film music. He is not isaignani, he is swaragnani."

7)Zubin Mehta - " I was bewildered after listening to his 'nothing but wind' and 'how to name it'. He belongs to the 21st century and perhaps beyond."

Our beloved Ilaiyaraaja Sir:

Thank you for giving me a lullabies in between 1976 and 1980 in which the period was my childhood days. I began to sing and memorize the song from that period only.

Thank you so much.

I wish your efforts will continue to give a good unique song.

I love to sing songs composed by Illayaraja. I have the strong belief that one can improve one's singing capability by singing the songs composed by Illayaraja. Somehow I got addicted to the songs composed by Illayaraja during 80s and I love to hear and sing along with the original singers of those songs. If I have to thank him for each and every song which I loved, then it is not possible. Just 10(very very few) of those I am mentioning here
1. "Oh vasandha raja" from Neengal Kaetavai
2. "Pillai Nila irandum vellai nila" from Neenga kaetavai
3. "Roja ondru mutham kaetkum naeram" from Kombaeri mookan
4. "Naane Naana" from Azhagae unnai Aaradhikiren
5. "Oru naal unnodu oru naal" from Uravaadum Nenjam
6. "Endhan pon vannamae" from Naan Vaazha vaipen
7. "Idhazhil kadhai ezhudhum" from Unnal Mudiyum Thambi
8. "Keeravani" from (film not known)
9. "Thamdhana namdhana thaalam varum" from Pudhiya vaarupugal
10."Naeram idhu Naeram idhu" from Rishi moolam

Expecting many such songs from Ilayaraja in future.

March 29 2001, 1:17 AM

Dearest Maestro,
I will never thank you at all. Will ever a son thank His father for giving him all comforts? Also, I don't think you expect anything in return from your son for all the support you give him!
Also, how can I just pick only one drop from an ocean of nectar? I can't say only one song as my favourite too!
That's why I say, I will never thank you!

Movie Directors are baffled ..

March 29 2001, 5:06 AM

source - podhigai T.V documentary on IR's music

1) Director Bharathiraaja - " I shoot scenes with a particular impact in mind. And even before i discuss about what i have in mind, he is already ready with mind boggling BGM bits.( In that programme Bharathiraaja explained about special 'mudhal mariyaathai' film scenes with wide eyes and astonishment)"

2) Director R.V.Udaiyakumar - "He was writing the background score for Chinna Kounder. In a particular scene i had made a very glaring error in designing the flow of shots. He asked me why i was a bit moody. I said i have made a mistake in choosing the shots. He simply said - I just now corrected your mistake with the BGM. Listen to this !!"

3) IR himself - A song should come in three minutes. Only then it is a song. I don't believe in taking months to compose couple of songs

Dear Maestro,

You have been seen as a miracle-man by ace director Maniratnam too. In his own words, he had this to say about you - Maniratnam in a filmfare article) -

"Illaiyaraja is absolutely prolific. He is an amazing talent who believes that the music written down by him should be stuck to totally. And then it is recorded which is just a matter of execution. I wish I could be like Ilaiyaraja and work out everything on paper."

Amazing, awed by consistency. These simple words to describe his proficiency in Music. No musician ever in whatever language could meet his mastery in music. From Annakilli's "Machchane Parthigala" to Friends " Ruku Ruku" never he has compromised in melody. I have grown up to his music and have breathed his music only. I pray to God to bestow him with long life so that many fans like me enjoy great many songs from this original Tamil genius ( unlike other tainted tamils).

How can one ever mention one favourite song...this is a wrong question it does not have one answer....And more over I just am not able to express my love to his music.......Thalaivar Thalaivar thaan..... Chancey illai ...I still remember buying a new cassette and just gazing at the cassette cover the whole night and ofcourse the songs playing in the backgroud..... recently I was thrilled for a personal news and I was driving ....The only person who accompanied me was none other than thalaivar...And the song was poomaalaye ...Wow what a intro ...I heard that song some 35 times continously....yengaiyo kuttitu poittaru....Sometimes I remember the scene from Thillu Mullu the interview Scene when Thengai Srinivasan tells Rajni that he is Pullarichified (Goose bumps) by Rajni's accomplishments... Athey maathiri yentha song kettalum appadiye pullarikka vachhiraaru...Just unbelievable....
these are just a drop in my ocean of elated feelings towards his music....Sorry for the bland language thats how it came out from my heart...
Guys I am heeding you guys about the Symphony and the new music Maestro will come out with...It will be in a totally new dimension and I feel that I personally would not be able to comprehend his artistic work it will be exponentially complex ... I think that How to name it and Nothing But wind are just rays of the music he is to give us....
Oh yes I would like to mention just one of my thousands of favourites..If you havent heard it pls do and till date everytime I hear it I discover something new in it....I am talking about is "I Met Bach In My House" ...simply vittu kalakittaru...
sari taata for now guys...Happy Isai Raaja ing

music for the soul

April 3 2001, 10:23 PM

Dear Maestro,

Whenever I am depressed, three of your masterpieces come to my rescue.

1)Nothing But Wind - "Especially that 'mozart-I love you' number - Incredibly soothing to the soul.

2)How To Name It - Every single piece.

3)Raajavin Ramanamaalai - This divine album has had a healing effect on me. You introduced me to the holy sage of south., "Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi"

Like millions of fans around the globe, I am eagerly awaiting your "Moods of Ilaiyaraaja" and "Symphony". I am aware that such musical treats get released only at "pre-destined" time, when the earth is ready for those "harmonic" chords.

Every spiritual event has its own time of occurance. We only hope that these musical "nectars" reach our gifted ears soon. Don't keep us waiting for long.We want more and more and more of such "universal" music from you.

Thankfully yours,

Yet another Die-hard fan

the world is waiting

April 3 2001, 10:37 PM

DEAR ILAIYARAAJA, the whole world is waiting...

1) Mr. Joseph Eager, Conductor, World Symphony Orchestra -"His music will be heard through the twenty-first century" predicted at a function to release the CD of his album Nothing But Wind in New York in 1988.

2)Mr. Victor Rangel Ribeiro, a well-known musicologist and author of Baroque Music - "Your ears will hear music like they never heard before"

3)Mr. Stephen Davis of New Age - "He is leading us to a very special world of music appreciation and has opened doors of new horizons of new age music"

4)Prof. Sheryar Ookerjee, a Bombay based musicologist writes,"Bach's influence is deep and all pervasive in his music. He is adept at using conventional western harmony and standard western techniques. Uses dialogue and imitation extensively. He has a competent grasp of the orchestra. His conspicuous quality is his ability to so integrate the Indian and western idioms that the seams can hardly be noticed and the result is usually pleasant, charming and satisfying. Ilaiyaraaja's music is enjoyable and worth taking very seriously. It grows on one with repeated hearings".

And The Maestro replies,"I still have a lot to learn. All that I do today in the field of music is only a precursor to something much greater that is to follow in the future. Why did Mozart make music? He prepared me. Beethoven prepared me. Thiagaraja prepared me. What I compose today is no new creation. I am only drawing on the ideas provided by them. And this may prepare somebody in future".

king of BGMs

April 10 2001, 10:40 PM

Dear Maestro,

A week ago I got to see 'mouna ragam' once again. No matter how many times one watches the movie, each & every time the BGM in the film storms my mind..and I am clueless as how on earth do you manage to compose such soulfull BGMs. Same is the case with the movie 'Nayagan'. Nayagan's BGM never fail to move me, no matter how many times I have listened to it already.

How really lucky we fans are to have you amidst us. Forget this 'thankless' film industry..we fans, billions around the globe are awaiting patiently..we sense that musical forms that will be more unbelievable and stunning are coming our way.

Planet earth is going to swing to your tunes. You have already indicated that 'very special' musical treats are coming our way..We are holding our breaths to embrace every bit of it with open hearts...Fill our souls with music..ThanKing you in advance

ever crazy about you
yet another harcore IR fan.

I would like to put forth a suggestion , try to pass this to Raja Sir ,

Raja Sir should colloborate an album with YO YO MA the renowned cello player with 16 grammy awards and an outstanding cello sollos for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon sountrack,

Raja Sir's carnatic , jazz , western classical forte with YO YO MA 's creative versatility in exploring different forms of music crossover would be a revelation to the world of music.

yet another baffled director

April 23 2001, 10:26 PM

The director of 'kutty', the latest film in which IR has worked, has joined the ever expanding list of people awed by maestro's calibre. In the director's own words....

"Had this film gone for any other music director, it would have been totally ineffective. But IR has been a great help to the film. Let me tell you one example. The lead character in this film is a poor girl child. In a particular scene she stands outside a school-gate, lonely-deprived and lost. IR told us that he too has something to say in this context. He asked us whether we would say that with dialogue or he needs to say that through background music. What a great composer with such simplistic behaviuor. Can we ever say better than what he can through music? We naturally left it to him."

Mahanadhi in Telugu

May 6 2001, 11:10 PM

Dear Maestro,

I happened to see the telugu version of kamalhassan's Mahanadhi recently. I didn't understand telugu, but you were there in every scene, speaking out loudly through your BGMs. My goodness...Can anyother music director ever handle this particular film better than how you did. How every apt was each BGM bit. I don't know telugu, but i know the language of music..especially when you have composed it...You were even bettering kamalhassan's on-screen performance during emotional scenes in that film. Well I just cannot stop admiring your calibre..You are something..you definetly are...How lucky we are, to have you amidst us!

Yours ever

Long Live RagaDevan

May 21 2001, 10:15 AM

Its truly a joyful occasion to express our extreme happiness about our Isaigyani. He'd created an astounding environment with his music and made people to feel truly about his competence and the excellence he'd should in his music. I'd been listening to his music for almost 14 years. It's really a worthy experience that every tamilian should be proud to live in his times.

Some of the songs that shook me were...

Chinna Kannan Azaikkiran-- Kavikuil
Malayil Yaro Manathodu Mayanga(Truly a great composition...)
PoongKathavae Thazh Thiravai- Nizalgal

( The above songs each would have reached my ears a minimum of 1500 to 2000 times) and so on....

May the Almighty bless him with longer life and shower our ears with more music than ever before...

Folks... Lets cheer for our Isaigyani....

Yes. We, IR fans want Maestro to hit hard in TFM so that there should not be any different opinion among his enemies about his geniusness. What I feel is that he wants his sons to come brighter in Film music. Unfortunately we are the losers eventhough his sons are getting their credits.
It is true that he scores very few films as compared in 80's, but the standard is there. In every year of 90's his film music is discussed and appreciated. People (especially his enemies) compare ordinary music directors with this genius. This is an insult, IR fans cannot tolerate. If IR hits hard that will teach them a lesson. IR fans are looking forward for this happen.

Dear IsaiGnani,
I don't fine words to praise you and ur work. I am indeed proud to have grown up listening to your music. Even today I am a great fan of yours for your lively BGM, the area where none can near you. There are lot of works of yours which should be thanked. But thanks for the recent wonderful performance in SETHU both songs and BGM.
Rgds,
Madanlal.

Dear Maestro,
I am one in millions who is yearning for your unreleased symphony that is going to rock the classical music world without any question. But instead of complaining I am taking this delay as a blessing to learn more about your classical compositions. There are thousands of your songs which has hidden symphonies in it for eg. Dalapathi-Sundari Kanal oru sethi.., Rajakumaran-RajaKuma Rajakumara...
I am enjoying your Hidden Symphonies while I am waiting for your Royal Symphony..
I am proud to be your fan, without you how could I learn to appreciate best musicians and music around the world.
I am not only your fan but your student too..

A composer par excellence !!

March 8 2002, 1:18 AM

Honourable Maestro,

I believe that you are a Musical legend and a legacy
to all Indians (Both to the average listeners and to the aspiring Musicians).

Sir, all your compostions carry so much of intricacy,
musically speaking, while there is plagarism going around otherwise. You give new dimension and due weightage to each of the instruments used in the accompaniments.

Your Music is certainly pleasing to the simple, and amazing to the discerning.

I pray to the Almighty for more blessings upon you and
your dear family.

Regards,
Jeevanesan

The unshakable legend

May 25 2002, 12:37 PM

I started to become an ardent fan of this music genius when I was in my 10th grade. Now I am 36 years old. I still remember the songs of Payanangal Mudivadhillai, the songs that remains to be master pieces of this great man.

The most fantastic song that I always listen is from Kozhi Koovuthu and the song is "Edho Mogam, Edho thaagam.." I don't think that there is can be a competition to this song by any one.

Let me make it very clear to all of them. Many Devas or many Rehmans will come and go, but the only person who will stand up always and continue to have a fan following of this magnitude will only be our MASTREO ILAYARAJA.

He is an unmatchable genius and what I would like to always call him as "...THE UNSHAKABLE LEGEND OF ALL TIMES..."

Gratitude

June 11 2002, 9:49 AM

When IR came to the music scene in late 70s i was fully engrossed in english pop music and RD Burman's hindi songs. when i got annakili record as a gift it made me sit up and listen. something special eventhough it was pure village music. the hummings of S.Janaki are still in my ears. but it was the subsequent songs (listed below)
- thevan thiruchabai malargale (avar eneke sontham)
- kannan oru (bathrakaali)
- poovizhi vaasalil (theepam)
- oru naall (uravaadum nenjam)
- illamayenum (pagalil oru iravu)
- senthoora poove (16 vayathiniley)
- thanni karuthiruchchu (illamai oonjalaadukirathu)
- kovil mani osai (kizhakke pogum rayil)
- saamakolli (ponnu oorukku puthusu)
that got me attracted to his powerful composition spirits and i became an ardent fan since then. english songs went for a spin. IR gave my culture a rebirth. my joyous moments and sad times were all spent with his music till today. i thank him for the wonderfull moments he had given me as listening pleasures and feel gifted to have been alive during his lifetime.

The melodius treasure of yours has given birth to many good young composers.
If melody can be surpassed by anything else then it can be done by Raaja only.
