Hi just bought a 1990 WB 2.6 turbo but im having a problem when the car comes under load from 3rd gear upwards it seems to have fuel cut then regains power is this a usual problem with them not had any experience with the cars before bought it because my supra is off the road and im bored with driving a L200 about.
Welcome Chris!
Do you know if the car is standard? It looks very nice.
If it is standard, i'd start by changing the fuel filter (i've only had experience of the 2 litre models, maybe someone else could confirm where the 2.6 filter(s) are??), then replace the plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. All fairly cheap, easy and often overlooked.
If the car's not standard, maybe someone else could suggest what the problem could be?Would I be right in thinking that it's not a problem with the boost having been increased too much for the ECU because the car regains power?
Good luck.
Regards,
Ash.
Thanks for the welcome that was my first thought was fuel starvation, ran some cleaner through the system but no luck there. Ive been looking for places to buy parts for the car ie filter plugs etc plus i want a stainless exhaust as the one on has been fitted by a bunch of cowboys by the looks of it got receipts for the parts but welding st/st to mild steel not the best ideas.
Hi again Chris,
I just use my local motor factors for service parts and consumables, they seem to be able to get hold of most bits i've ever needed. I'm in Essex and use Motor Parts Direct, i've also heard that Central Auto Supplies are equally as useful.
With the 2.6 engine, you've got a great choice of performance parts available from the USA and Australia. Look up Top End Performance and visit the Austarion website too.
Powerflow or Longlife are the people to talk to about stainless steel exhausts for Starions, although people are divided on which is best!!I haven't got much experience of either (yet!).
Ash.
I had my exhaust custom made in stainless, size wise 2.5" is best for a street car. Get a turbo back system, have the sharp elbow from the turbo removed in favour of a sweeping bend and keep the down pipe straight with just a back box for best results. Had mine done like this and the difference was VERY VERY noticeable.
As for parts, the us is good almost $2 to the £ at the moment. As Ash said service parts are easy to get hold of to be honest, I've had no trouble with getting them, upgrade parts will have to come from the states and will be cheaper than stock parts from the UK. Eg £120 each for a standard rear disc, £236 for drilled and grooved discs front and rear WITH up rated pads from the states, well worth the 2 week wait if you ask me.
As for the fuel cut, could be too much boost, the ecu cuts fuel when the boost reaches 14.5 psi. If the car has a bleed valve fitted and the boost increased this could be the cause, The standard Boost gauge on the 2.6 isn't accurate above standard boost, I'm not 100% sure, but it could be a Bad secondary injector or just bad connection on the clip.
Thanks for the info the boost is no where near 14.5, the car has been sat since november until i bought in on fri, so i have ordered the usual stuff fuel filter etc to eliminate them and basically to give it a good service too. I shall have a look at the clips and connections at lunch time today to see what they are like.

My 2.6 G reg has a similar problem. It missfires badly (possible fuel cut) under load in 3rd 4th 5th. I have changed leads, plugs, coil, fuel regulator, fuel filter, air filter, rotor arm, cap, removed most electrical connection blocks and soldered, fitted manual boost controller, fitted new injector clips, used fuel system cleaner, adjusted timing. The problem is now more intermitant. I will change the fuel pump next. I have had a better drive from it when using octane booster. In fact it goes really well with too much octane.
