I failed the MOT with lack of force with handbrake. I have taken off both calipers and knackered cable in the process. I have dismantled the mechanism lubed up the cam and screw mechanism. put back together . Cant see how to get more than 1-2 mm movement. All components seem to be in good order. Mitsubishi local dealer had no idea! Any thoughts?
You'll need to remove some parts of the enter consul. Start by opening the arm rest and pulling out the liner (it's not fixed is so should just lift out) You'll see the cables from there. I think from memory you'll need to pop the plastic panel out in front of the arm rest to reach the adjustment part. Should take more than a few mins to do it all.
i hope by you saying you have dismantled the caliper you dont mean completely as if you have removed the whole of the handbrake mechanism unless you have managed to get all of the spacers back in then the handbrake will never work!
i did the same on a caliper and whilst it worked fine under normal braking the handbrake would not work at all and i had to pay to have my calipers refurbed.
The hand brakes are often a problem. My latest 2.6 car had virtually no h/brake. I replaced the cables first. Then removed the brake assemblies and wound back the pistons by using an angle grinder key (taking care not to slip and make a hole in your hand!) and a small hammer to give a tap with each 1/2 turn. Then removed the rear rubber boots and oiled the mechs. It all works great now, and flew the MOT.
