performance improvments

Hi everyone

seen a few of you asking about how to tackle performance upgrades, and just thought i would add a little info for you guys.

as far as rebuilding the engine to make it stronger all the advise on here has it covered, so i wont go there.

Im an Ex starion owner and have owned a 3000GT for about 7 years now, and the expirience ive gained boosting its performance is what i wanted to share.

if you increase the boost to increase the combustion in the starion engine you will increase power, thats a well known fact, but the standard starion injector setup will not provide the fuel to cope with much more than about 220 BHP.

increasing fuel pressure can make the stock injectors act as though they are bigger but at the expence of atomisation of the fuel.

if you fit bigger injectors will the current ECU just control them as though they are standard , and run very rich off boost, probably is the answer.

the way ive achieved the same thing on my 3000GT is to fit bigger injectors, but then fool the ECU into believing they are standard size.

this is done not buy changing the ECU, but by making the ECU think there is less air flowing through the MAF then there realy is.

this can be achieved in many ways, using an AFR controller.

also if you are running anything but very mild boost enhancment then the bleed valve based boost control is no longer a viable option.

All this adds considerable cost and so is only available to those serious about upgrades, and ive spend 8k so far on similar for my 3000GT.

im sing a product from full throttle tech called the MAF Translator pro which is supported on the starion.

This gets rid of the MAF, and allows you to dump the standard restrictive airbox and replace it with a large K&N style air filter.

the MAFT pro uses an algorithm called speed density , that calculates air flow based on boost pressure, air temperature and size of engine, plus throttle position, which it gets from the standard car, with the addition of a map sensor and air temp sensor.

the ECU still controls the injectors and you can fit bigger ones , as the MAFT pro can fool the ECU into believing they are smaller and therefore run round town OK.

and then when needed they can open up and flood the engine with as much fuel as needed to support the boost you are running.

there are full ecu replacments, and 4 point injector rails that will provide the ultimate in fueling, but all ive spoken about is would you believe it designed to keep costs down, by piggy backing the existing systems.

However it still costs significant money, especialy when you take into consideration the reidule vale of the starion, or even my 10 year old 3000GT.

so for enthesiasts with deep pockets and no concern about the cars eventual value.

Im still fond of the Starion, and hope this is of some help to you guys.

best regards

peter
