Most of the large systems I worked on were 7x24 systems. Even scheduled maintenance had to be in the wee hours of the morning when it would have less impact on the users of the systems. A major problem meant that we had to work round the clock until the system was back up. My phone or beeper would often go off at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning! Although my paychecks were often pretty good, most of them included what I used to call "blood overtime". The money was good but the job hours were not great for your health.
