I had a talk with some twenty-somethings in a yahoo writing club a few days
ago...tell it like it is, an out and out verbal assault! They were
callin’ me "dude," and "old soldier boy," and "old fart." They
just totally disrespected me, and all of the soldiers who fought in
Vietnam...making fun of the homeless vets and those still suffering
from that war...calling us cry babies! They also said I made a lot
of assumptions, but they spelled it ASSumptions!

I told them..."At first I was offended, but then I thought...at last
we’ve found an area we can agree on." I told them, "You're darn
tootin’ I make ASSumptions!"

I wrote this poem in their honor:

Infantrymen patrolling jungle shadows deep
Must right away make telling ASSumptions.
If ever they are to reach another night’s sleep
ASSumptions must ASSuredly be made
Without compunctions!

Can you guess where this is going? Read the rest of the
poem "ASSumptions," along with "I've Never Seen A General In A
Foxhole," and "Closure," at:
