Response to One rifle using 7.62x39mm is...

The M-14 is chambered for the 7.62 NATO cartridge which is the .308 Winchester in civilian form. The .308 is a cut down version of the 30/06 that the '03 Springfield and the M-1 Garand fired. The 7.62x39mm saw service in Vietnam in the chambers of the AK-47. The 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) cartridge is still used in many high power rifle matches and is the low-end choice for sniper rifles. It has good ballistics out past the 300 yard mark and is affected less by cross winds, at long ranges, than the 5.56 FMJ (.223 Remington) cartridge.
