"BOWIE AND THE SEVENTIES ON THE BEEB TONIGHT
We may pick him up on channel 2...
Historian Dominic Sandbrook celebrates the publication this week of his latest book on the subject of the 1970s. Called Seasons in the Sun: The Battle for Britain, 1974-1979, the book is the third instalment in Sandbrook's celebration of the late 60s and the 1970s.
And while you didn't generally see chaps walking the streets in the outfit illustrated here, David Bowie's undeniable influence on the look and sound of the seventies is well represented in the first of four one hour BBC 2 shows tonight, Get It On 70-72.
The soundtrack is packed with gems of the period, including Bowie's own Starman, Oh! You Pretty Things and John, I'm Only Dancing and Mott's All The Young Dudes. This is a fair reflection of Bowie's input of the period seeing as no other artist played gets more than one track to their name.
Get It On 70-72 starts at 9:00pm with iPlayer access if you miss this first airing.
Stay tuned to the same channel at 10:00pm for Arthouse Glam - Get in the Swing - the first in a new ten-part series of Sounds Of The 70s with performances from The Kinks, Roxy Music, Elton John, New York Dolls, Queen, Sparks, Rod Stewart and the recently-rediscovered David Bowie performance of The Jean Genie on TOTP from January 1973."
