HI, I can't help but wonder if Bowie singing about the ravages of Time on songs such as Changes, Rock 'N Roll Suicide, and Time was merely an ego trip.
Let's look at some lines:
Time may change me, but I can't change time
Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
Time, his script is you and me
Bowie was very young singing these lyrics. He was trying to impress us as a prescient young man. "Look how young he is, how does he know about such things?"
In fact Bowie has always felt aloof from time, even singing he will "Never Get Old" while wearing shocks of blonde hair, tight jeans, and the Converse sneakers of the teenager.
It was okay for Bowie to sing about the effects of Time when he was young and beautiful.
