Different 'Outside' tracklist

In an attempt to keep it more in terms with the 'Leon' tape, I came up with this tracklist the other night. Shorter (and therefore also better) than the original album of course, but equally long as, for example, 'Diamond Dogs', or 'Lodger'.

01 The Heart's Filthy Lesson
02 A Small Plot Of Land
03 Baby Grace
04 Hallo Spaceboy
05 The Motel
06 Algeria Touchshriek
07 Ramona A Stone / I Am With Name
08 Nathan Adler
09 I'm Deranged

hmm...

but you do miss out on some of the better tracks!

like; I've Not Been to Oxford Town, We Prick You, and Thru These Architects Eyes

actually... from what I remember - your version is even shorter than the "Excerpts from Outside" release, which features edited versions of Leon Takes Us Outside & The Motel.

No Control, Segue- Algeria Touchshriek, Wishful Beginnings, Thru' These Architects Eyes, Segue- Nathan Adler #2 and Strangers When We Meet are all missing

"My Outside" probably would have

Leon Takes Us Outside (edit) / Outside <- just as one track
The Heart's Filthy Lesson (Simenon aka Simple Text Mix)
A Small Plot of Land
Segue Baby Grace (A Horrid Cassette)
Hallo Spaceboy
The Motel
The Man Who Sold the World (Eno Mix aka "Live Version")
I Have Not Been To Oxford Town
Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)
Segue / I Am With Name
Nothing to Be Desired
We Prick You
Segue Nathan Adler
I'm Deranged
Thru These Architect's Eyes
Segue Nathan Adler
Strangers When We Meet

so - missing the Algeria Touchschriek segue, which really isn't necessary for the narrative
and "No Control" & "Wishful Beginnings" (which could be used as b-sides w/ "Get Real")

...if 'my version' was still too long, I'd probably switch "The Motel" for the edited version, and probably drop... well - I guess all the other segues...

...well - of course

I was only going by what David has actually released

If I could - there'd be no way that "We'll Creep Together" (for example) would be missing from the album

Yes, I agree with you there, birotheleggy; it's beyond comprehension that Bowie left out 'We'll Creep Together' from the 'Outside' album...

Apart from the fact that not enough tracks from the 'Leon-Inside' session were included, the one thing I don't like about the way the album was released is the way 'Strangers When We Meet' was tagged on, closing the album. It's a good version, but should have been a single-only. It just doesn't fit with the overall theme, neither lyrically nor musically. For an ambitious concept album like this I would have liked a more worthy closer, like 'Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family' on 'Diamond Dogs'. Wouldn't 'I'm Deranged' have been a better closing track? It's certainly one of the album's definitive highpoints and the tracks which follow feel almost unnecessary. I do love 'Thru These Architects Eyes' though, but I think it should have been better placed earlier on in the tracklist, somewhere in the beginning as there is kind of an ouverture feel to it -

I agree, it seems a bit nailed on at the end. I think the best opening and closing tracks on Bowie albums are the ones that set the tone of the album, like on Heathen, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Low etc...

IMO, SWWM is a Buddha song. End of! Could you imagine Ziggy closing to a re-recording of Quicksand? Just wouldn't work.

Having said that I'm not sure what song I would have chosen to close the album, maybe The Motel.

I guess Bowie (& or BMG) felt that the album was a bit too bleak and inaccessible, so SWWM adds a bit of a tune at the end. The light at the end of the tunnel. Add to that how Bowie was hurt by how few people bought Buddha, you can understand him wanting to give it a wider audience.

Take away the segues...and it is a masterpiece! I just takes the segues out when i cue it up and it flows just right.
