Did Bowie deserve to play Andy Warhol in Basquiat?

Hi. Bowie wrote a song called "Andy Warhol" in which he made fun of him:

"Andy Warhol looks a scream...."

"Think about paint and think about glue/What a jolly boring thing to do"

Warhol was reportedly shocked and humiliated when he heard the song for the first time. Additionally, when Bowie sang the song live on Bowie at the Beeb, he further mocked Warhol, mimicking his vocal patterns.

I wonder if it was fair for Bowie to play Warhol in the film, Basquiat. Bowie did not respect Warhol at all. After Warhol's death, it does not seem fitting that Bowie should be the one to leave a monument to him in film.

That aside...

October 6 2008, 11:55 PM

Don't forget:

"Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms, the Andy Warhol exhibition at Hayward Gallery is on show 10am - 6pm, late night Fridays until 10pm, from Tuesday 7th October 2008 - Sunday 18th January 2009. Tickets are £10.00.

Presenting films, screen test, videos and television programmes, along with the more famous paintings and installations, the Andy Warhol exhibition at Hayward Gallery brings to light the amazing creative processes of this 20th century Da Vinci and combines rare archive material to capture the unusual spirit with which Warhol worked. Organised in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Museum in America, the exhibition is certain to bring some stunning pieces of his work to London, and will most likely be one of the biggest shows in London over the winter."

I was there.

That art show was also in Holland last year and start of this year!!!

You will like it, its good.

As for Bowie playing Warhol, I think that was a good move. Bowie played him well.

Fair point Sam but perhaps Bowie failed to enlighten Warhol's creativity and conveyed the wrong message. After all he felt Robert Zimmerman "had a voice like sand and glue" and he admired him a great deal.

I must admit Basquiat disappointed me, perhaps not just Bowie's performance but the film in general. But hey, give me Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence any day. Why? Because Bowie was good but Conti was brilliant.

Love you long time, Johnny! $10?

Conti is a good actor. I loved him in MCML and other films too.

I think the fact that Bowie wrote songs about Andy Warhol and Dylan shows that he liked them.
His lyrics just do not make any sense maybe he wanted to be Arty with his lyrics

Why not? At least Bowie has a personality!

October 8 2008, 9:42 PM

Whatever Andy's style, or shtick was, he was a bit wooden to me, for whatever reason.

I'd pay a dollar (or more) to see Bowie gussied up as that weirdo Andy Warhol and making a good film out of it all ...

-"Since I'm going to Hell, bet ya $20.00 it looks like a Rob Zombie production ."

According to this David Bowie Biography, they were friends. In that case then, it would be fitting that Bowie would play Warhol, no?

Bowie did a great job as Warhol.

Nobody has mentioned the dude that played Basquiat.

Jeffrey Wright, in my opinion, the finest actor of his generation. I didn't know at the time, but I'd seen him lots of movies and not realised it was the same bloke. His range is awesome.
