spiders from mars lp

anybody out there have this?

you know, the one with the crappy red cover (at least the 12" vinyl lp has - mmm...dunno if it ever made a cd release)?

any views / reviews?

i was prompted to ask because i saw a copy in a shop this afternoon & nearly bought it

ok, yes, that's 'nearly bought it' (ha! another 'almost' story) - i thought about it, but didn't in the end - i suppose that i could go back & get it... but i got a pristeen copy of bob dylan's 'nashville skyline' instead. much better, i'd guess - it's an underrated / overlooked lp, this, imo. even tho' it has the fab 'lay lady lay' on it.

anyway - that spiders lp, anyone?

.

Just like you - I almost bought it.

Vaguely remember hearing a snippet I wasn't too impressed with at a friend's house.

Bowie Bash at the Roundhouse!

I've got the LP but it's been ages since I listened to it.
Don't remember anyone ever being impressed by it.

mmm...i wonder if that'll be the consensus?

i'd never even heard of this lp until about 10 years ago. i guess that it never sold very well or made much of an impact - even among the db faithful.

i'd be interested to hear from anyone who's heard it recently.

I have the cd, played it once and didn't like it.

It was released on cd in 2000 by the way, in the 'Bowie connection series' which also featured Woody Woodmansey's U-Boat album amongst others.

I bought it the time..

I must have played it.

Was Woody and Trev on it?

I can't remember all the musicians involved on the album.

If you decide to buy it..

Let us know what you think about it.

Of its time. The U-Boat album is a scream, too.

I always thought this Spanish picture sleeve was hilarious as well - it isn't hard to see who brought the sense of style to The Spiders!

naff

In 1971 naff was spelt as naf - which stood for "nasty as fuck" - funny how things change isn't it?

It was Freddie Burretti

November 22 2008, 2:27 PM

who mentioned naf in 1971 in that Curosity magazine interview.

Didn't know that and it's the first time I've seen it spelt with one "f".

Wow ! They really pushed the budget on the presentation for that album cover, bet it sounds no better than it looks.

Mr Bolder looks like an extra for Robin Hood and Woody should be at the helm of the Enterprise.

Anyone know who the other two guys are ?

I think the problem was probably contracts and rights and Tony DeFreese.

Re: Stu ...

have not heard the spiders lp in 30 yrs but seem to remember it was terrible. i did go to see them once at the roundhouse and met woody and trev after. backstage was a little embarassing though because everybody just wanted to ask them about bowie.

U boat were a little naff too but a lot more fun to go and see live. a little theatre (submarine noises and a fake machine gun with a strobe light)and a lead singer who did not look too bad. they had some sort of a residency at the marquee club and i saw them several times. the highlight of their set was Bowie's bombers. which at that time was the first i had ever heard of it.

Yeah, I recall the Spiders album as being terrible, but actually, 30-odd years on and with a different perspective, some of it doesn't seem so bad.

Re: spiders from mars lp

Pete McDonald (former singer of Geordie band Kestrel - from whence the not at all bad Spiders From Mars guitarist Dave Black also came) was given the job of Spiders From Mars lead singer. A short while later a guy called Nigel Benjamin became lead singer of Mott after Mott The Hoople split.

I'm struck by the similarity of both men's voices. Although neither voice is a patch on those of David Bowie (totally brilliant and incredibly versatile) or Ian Hunter (not brilliant but full of character and excitement) respectively, they are remarkably similar.

Take Good Day America by Spiders From Mars and compare it with something like She Does It from Mott's Drive On. It could be the same person singing.
