1. Would you buy it?

2. Should she cover one of her dad's songs? Which one(s)?

Her mom is so beautiful and her father is a true genius.

Float on a river forever and ever.

Absolutely.

Of course, being female and a New Yorker, she will instantly have a distinction from her father.

Any nod to Bowie will just be treated as a lot of fun.

Look at this pic

How could Bowie possibly want to return to work when he has such a beautiful wife, daughter & a cute dog as well? Iman's in her 50's but looks stunning.

No chance of him coming back to work for us miserable moaners. I know he has read these boards, & I bet reading some fans' views has put him off us.

...hey hey, I would burn too if you should lie upon that bamboo pyre..

<< 1. Would you buy it? >>

NO! why would I want to?

And more to the point why would she want to release a CD just to live in her fathers shadow. Just because he father was a rock superstar doesn't give her automatic entry into the music business, and any CD released would be forever compared to what her dad achieved no matter how good or bad it might possibly be.

Duncan had the correct idea which which was to keep well away from trying to emulate his dad in the music industry.

Ridiculous!

Lexy carries the music genes of the greatest musician of the 20th century.

Even a very member of Bowie's band (now a renowned musician in her own right) would have never played a note with that attitude.....

Catherine_Russell.jpg

Yes, that is Catherine 'Cat' Russell - the daughter of one of the greatest jazz pianists and band leaders, Luis Russell.

Here is Cat's first piano lesson with her dad:

Just thinking.....how good would it be for Lexy to sing XTC's 'Dear God' in partial response to Bowie's 'A Better Future'?

Here are the original lyrics which were even sung by an 8 year old girl:

Dear God,

Hope you got the letter and,

I pray you can make it better down here.

I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer,

But all the people that you made in your image,

See them starving on their feet,

Cause they don't get enough to eat from

God

I can't believe in you

A child's voice could certainly work to great effect on some Bowie songs.

The question I answered was would I buy it, and like I said no I wouldn't and why would I. OK Alexandria might? have some of her fathers musical genes but does that mean she is going to be as good as her dad was? She might well be, then again it isn't a given is it! she would have to prove herself first prefferably anonymous if that could be at all be possible ( I really do feel quite sorry for off spring like her who have such a famous parent )

I go back to my original point which is why would she want to? she would be forever seen as either living in her dads shadow, or using her dads fame to get noticed if it was publicly known who she was. Julian Lennon springs to mind, he has his dads musical genes and he is an OK singer musician but he isn't another bloody John Lennon is he.

What amuses me is how many db fans would buy a CD by Lexy just because she is db's daughter regardless of how good or bad it might be. Clinging on to David Bowie at all costs it would seem to me.

Your reactions are too hard.

She either has it or she doesn't, that I agree.

But we will never know until we give it a try.

In English speak that is something like 10 quid. Not a life long commitment.

And if it completely sucks, you don't have to buy her next album. Your hands are not tied!

Surely "clinging to David Bowie at all costs" is far more indicative of people that have bought a David Bowie product when they know it contained almost EXACTLY the same songs as one they previously owned.

In other words, almost everyone here.

<< In English speak that is something like 10 quid. Not a life long commitment.>>

preferable to borrow it from the Library or hear it on the net etc before parting with your hard earned me thinks, at least Until she were to prove herself. But again I ask the question why would she really want to? I should imagine it would be more hassle than reward unless she really was in love with the idea of making music.

< And if it completely sucks, you don't have to buy her next album. Your hands are not tied!>>

I know I don't, it's just that I just don't get this idea that some fans think off spring of famous people are going to be anyway near as good as their mother or father were.

< Surely "clinging to David Bowie at all costs" is far more indicative of people that have bought a David Bowie product when they know it contained almost EXACTLY the same songs as one they previously owned. <br> In other words, almost everyone here.>>

At least a David Bowie product is by David Bowie.

How do you see that as clinging on? I see that as being a dedicated die hard fan ( term it how you want) who just happens to like collecting David Bowie releases for collection / increased value purposes or whatever. I know you weren't meaning me specifically, but in my case even I have stopped buying so many re issues of re issues unless I can get them really cheap in a sale or charity shop.

I figure that if you're a fan of David Bowie's music and follow his work and inspiration passionately then a CD by his very own daughter with actual NEW SONGS is going to say more.

Certainly, it should say more than the decision of an EMI executive who decides to issue exactly the same songs you already have.

Most of us are guilty of this at some point. Unfortunately, I think we're only falling in love with physical objects that most resemble the teat of David Bowie for which we are most familiar --> that is the format on which the music is issued.

This becomes much more an OCD tendency than it is representative of the art, product or life of David Bowie in any way whatsoever.

Personally, I'd rather see the ACTUAL artwork of the person for which David Bowie has decided to shun the world and spend the later part of his life nurturing.

<< I figure that if you're a fan of David Bowie's music and follow his life and inspiration passionately then a CD by his very own daughter with actual NEW SONGS is going to say more.>>

I see where your coming from Adam but in my case when I witnessed Ziggy / David Bowie back in 72 it was Ziggy / David Bowie that shock and awed me, for reasons we all know, I don't see how it automatically follows that an album by Lexy is going to do the same. Then again I don't follow David Bowie's life and inspirations as such, rather I follow David Bowie's actual art. I mean some of David Bowie's personal tastes in music for example I can't personally get on with.

< Certainly, it should say more than the decision of an EMI executive who decides to issue exactly the same songs you already have.>>

Yes and no. I mean an EMI executive decides to re issue the same songs to a willing fan base because their job is to make money. If fans want to buy re issues for whatever their reasons? then the likes of EMI will provide them. I don't really agree with it all as such, but if people are buying re issues then who can really blame EMI. Also to be fair there are / have been signs that the likes of EMI have been trying to get some good stuff out to us, the trouble is their hands are often tied as to what they can or can't release sadly.

< Most of us are guilty of this at some point. Unfortunately, I think we're only falling in love with physical objects that most resemble the teat of David Bowie for which they are most familiar --> that is the format on which the music is issued.>>

Yes I agree.

< This becomes much more an OCD tendency than it is representative of the art, product or life of David Bowie in any way whatsoever.>>

Again yes and no. Yes it is an OCD tendency, no because depending on ones viewpoints different packaged Bowie albums / products are art in their own right to some fans. Very often I personally can't see how they can be, but there you go.

< Personally, I'd rather see the artwork of the person for which David Bowie has decided to shun the world and spend the later part of his life nurturing. >>

I agree again, I've mentioned in several posts that db should take an active guiding role in the career of an upcoming and raw / exciting new artist so long as they are not related to him and he gives said artist their own freedom and individuality whilst guiding them and giving his input in the background. That is where db really needs to go now, rather than trying to stay in the public eye as a front line rock artist.

Question... If Lexy were to try and make it into music would db be her manager? bearing in mind he is so against the idea of music managers. After all just because he is her dad it doesn't always follow that his decisions which would be right for him would be right for his daughter.

I think db would be a great manager to have if he so desired for an up and coming unknown and unrelated music artist, but I could for see problems if he tried to manage his daughter, after all going by my own personal experience kids always think they know best! wink.gif

When she's a bit older and has acquired abilities to play and write on...

...a myriad of different instruments, then sure! Why not?

She's living with a creative genius; you're bound to pick up a few tips along the way..

If she's bitten by the same general creative bug to want to write and record like David has, then why not?

Having a wealth of influences, culture and being exposed to a lot of different things..

She could very well turn out to be very good at music one day; who knows?

Either way, cd or not, I envy her for the day when (if it hasn't happened already wink.gif ) she realizes what a mark her father has left on the world with the work he creates, how proud and cool she must be feeling that her dad is that cool; having inspired and influenced so many people..

It would be cool to see how her artistic bends somehow connect to what David does, or has done. After all, Duncan is a filmmaker. Maybe Lexi will wind up a writer or fashion designer, something! Either way, she's got cool parents who do cool stuff. That's pretty cool wink.gif LOL.

Iman has no problem being away from her family for work, She was selling her junk on QVC and the last few years she filmed project runway Canada in Toronto and Montreal and Ottawa, Plus all the press tours she did for the show. Bowie has the dog and Lexie to take care of while Iman is away working.

If Alexandria Zahra Jones releases a cd when she's grown up, I'd think 'WOW RETRO!' and look at the antiquated format and remember my youth fondly. It's kind of like if her dad put out a cassette now.
