I just watched "Phantom Of The Paradise" for the first time since the Eighties. Brian De Palma's fourth (I think) film and very inflected by glam and Ziggy in particular, especially Gerrit Graham's ineffable rock star Beef. The choreography was done by Harold Oblong, a mime, natch. Very stylish, a comedic take on a tragic story that still beats the crap out of Andrew Lloyd Something.
The premise - man who is born old and grows younger with the years - got people talking so much that when I finally got so see it, I was disappointed. It's a very typical love story disguised under an unusual plot. Once I got accostumed to the "unusual" plot, I couldnn't avoid a yawn or two...
And the special effects kinda made me cringe a bit. When Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett appear younger, I couldn't avoid the feeling that the faces looked like plastic.........
Last weekend we watched Rocknrolla which was Guy Ritchie formulaic, but fun.
Tonight we're watching Quantum of Solace for the first time, as we weren't inspired enough to see it at the cinema, in spite of how much we just loved Casino Royale.
Have been watching TV series on DVD more than movies of late (all seasons of Dexter, Ashes to Ashes, Mad Men, Flight of the Conchords).
"Conchords" is great; they underplay like Keaton. I also loved what they did with Mr. Bowie in Season One.
On a related NZ topic (Antipodean eccentricities) does anyone know anything about New Zealand's National Nude Day? Was this something the sheep voted through?
Em, Phantom was such a blast, with some really good pop. Paul williams
did a fantastic job with that movies soundtrack (go figure). Beef had me in stitches
especially when he falls off his platforms and of course the shower scene.
I was just a kid but it always stuck with me, loved it, still do!
I would love a DVD of it, purely for guilty pleasure moments.
Talking of Paul Williams (who I liked, but he had the strangest voice) I watched Bugsy Malone a couple of times a few weeks ago (it was on cable - they repeat things). Hadn't seen it for years. Great movie.
I still can't bear to watch the end of Friday the 13th.That must be the scariest movie moment ever.
No,there is a scene in the original The Haunting which is scarier still...
