Well, 100% Brit (and apparently proud of it) is being a bit over the top when he says 8 hours [of Outside outtakes]. I'd love to know the truth concerning what 100% Git really has ~ Reeves Gabrels, 2003
A unique opportunity for fans to remix their own version of Space Oddity on their computer and via new iPhone application iKlax.
40 years ago to the day that Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon, EMI will create a unique opportunity for David Bowie fans: the chance to download and mix the original multi-tracks of Space Oddity which also celebrates the 40th anniversary of its original release on July 11th.
Partly inspired after seeing Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey, which premièred in London in May 1968, Space Oddity was originally written later that year with the first known recorded version dating from February 1969, several months before its eventual release on July 11th 1969 and some time before the Apollo 11 moon landings.
Space Oddity was a cultural landmark for David Bowie as an artist it was featured by the BBC in its television coverage of the lunar landing, and the song later won an Ivor Novello award. The songs mysterious character, Major Tom, later reappeared in the song Ashes To Ashes, albeit the worse for wear.
The Space Oddity Digital EP will consist of the four tracks listed below and when fans purchase the EP they will also receive the original eight stems/multi-tracks for free, enabling them to remix the song through their own software or through iKlax software.
The Space Oddity Digital EP tracklisting:
Space Oddity (original UK mono single edit)
Space Oddity (US mono single edit)
Space Oddity (US stereo single edit)
Space Oddity (1979 re-record)
This is a revolutionary experience for music fans to recreate their own versions of one of popular musics most iconic songs. Here are the original eight stems/multi-tracks that will be made available:
Space Oddity (Bass and Drums)
Space Oddity (Strings)
Space Oddity (Acoustic Guitar)
Space Oddity (Mellotron)
Space Oddity (Backing Vocal, Flute and Cellos)
Space Oddity (Stylohone and Guitar)
Space Oddity (Lead Vocal)
Space Oddity (Main Backing Vocal Including Countdown)
Stay tuned for more information regarding this release and the iKlax software. An update of this digital remix promotion in the US will follow shortly.

Well the norm is to have a 2nd cd and leave the original album intact these days, but I don't think there is any place for a 40th anniversary physical release, I would have thought we would have heard by now if there was.
Shame though, it could have had the bedroom demos on the second disc.
Although given Toby, I mean "Annie" is back, I'd almost expect him/her to ask if this info was Bowienet why did you need to copy it to here?
Seriously though...I've long felt there was so much going on musically with "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" from the London 3rd July 73 gig, I wish they'd offer us the same opportunity with that - last time I counted there were 5 mix variations, and that is not counting the 5.1 mix on DVD. I do not have the equipment to listen to that fully...the entire flute part is across three of the mixes (bits are edited out of each! ), and similarly the guitar and piano parts and filtered in and out across the mixes.
but the packaging and quality control will get worse
seriously though, could that mean The Width Of A Circle or The Man Who Sold The World, or even...my favourite nomination for 1970 - The Prettiest Star?
In the case of Space Oddity, it's such a "rock classic" and so familiar, it will be very interesting to see just how much we can identify when stripped back to say, just a single track.
My feeling is that there will be a few surprises - like the first time a lot of us heard LIFE ON MARS separated out on that Swedish doco or say, SATELLITE OF LOVE in the Transformer album series.
I'd like to see this trend continue!!

this reminds me of guitar hero where if you miss a note only certain parts of the song play. i guess using all these different tracks is how they make that happen.
I just hope BowieNet or some other site posts "winning" mixes of the song from fans. We are a creative bunch, us bowiephiles, and it would be nice to see what we could do with it. Eat your heart out, Gus.
What's that iPhone thingy they're promoting alongside...some sort of mixer? The Ziggy Stardust app is a lot of fun; many facts I didn't need to know and some nice pictures.
