The MPs expenses scandal, and the fact that politicians of all parties have been proved to be a load of lying, corrupt, and totally untrustworthy bastards.

<< true and actually lets not forget the global recession >>
You know what I'm increasingly thinking this recession thing is a load of old cobblers and just an excuse for employers to jump on the band wagon so they can cut jobs more easily and not give pay rises.
Royal Mail for example have announced they are not giving it's workers a pay rise this year despite announcing a 350 million pound profit! and despite the fact we got pay rises when we were losing a million pound a day at one time? they are also in the process of slashing jobs to the bone at the inevitable expense to quality of service which in some cases can amount to a pay cut of over 100 quid a week! for some staff. Go figure!
Also have you noticed when you go to the Tescos or wherever, luxury goods like TVs etc are still flying off the shelves everywhere. My idea of a true recession is where the majority of people can barely afford to eat let alone buy the luxuries in life.
Of course there are people who are genuinely struggling because they have lost their jobs for whatever reason, and my heart felt sympathy goes out to those people who are genuinely struggling to make ends meet, but I'm increasingly of the opinion that this whole recession thing is being blown out of all proportion just to suit corrupt business and politicians agendas.
Edit.... Of coure this decade will be remembered as the decade David Bowie retired and a truly individual and unique artist ( far more of a loss than Michael Jackson ) is lost to us forever, the like of which we won't see again for a very long time.

Take That have a massive comeback, probably bigger than they were before.
"There haven't really been any new musical genres emerging either" well not new but there was a remergence of the singer/songwriter genre. the downside of that is james Blunt also Take That jumped that sound.
also as new genres - there's Electro-Clash, Mash-ups (though Norman Cook did this in the 90's)
Good point about Mashups, they have become really popular in the last decade. Go Home Production's Papa Was A Clock being my favourite outcome.
I think it was david Gray and Dido who re-ignited the appeal of the singer songwriter. White Ladder and No Angel were massive albums released in '99, I think.
Bowie released some very decent music this decade, just didn't do enough of it
Heathen, half of Reality & all those wonderful b-sides/ non album tracks. Wood Jackson, Conversation Piece, Fly, Nature Boy, Your Turn To Drive, You've Got A Habit....
And of course, Chubby Little Loser, the last new composition we ever got from Bowie!
