I read that when the part of Goblin King Jareth in Labyrinth was cast, they considered a few other fellows from the music world before deciding on The Gentleman
Mick Jagger
Sting
And a certain Michael J. (Yes, the now-departed so-called King of Pop)
I think these guys would have been all wrong for the part (and I'm something of a Sting/Police fan) and there was no other Goblin King but Mr. Bowie himself
Most casting directors would have been given instructions similar to: "Find us a pop star, maybe with acting chops, who can play sexy but creepy." Mr. Bowie was the one who had nothing else to do that week and was amused to wear the hair. Fandom usually isn't an issue.
BTW, there was a Labyrinth festival in Portland, Ore. a few months ago. Don't know what else they showed.
It was sorta one, if I'm thinking of the right one. We had a big Henson marathon- and it was shown. I'm mad I missed the Henson commercials, as they're fantastic.
To the Marsupial Tiger,
I don't live in Portland, but my sister (the Gothy witchy one with the lurid rock 'n' roll past) does. She keeps me up on things.
I think Labyrinth would have been a better film if it had been cast entirely out of the characters from the Muppet's, at least Bowie then wouldn't have ended up looking like one!
