I would say overall America is more influenced by British music. Take Foo Fighters/Nirvana for instance. They are referencing British bands so much. Come as you are = Killing Joke's Eighties
Foof FIghters have covered Gary Numan, Psychedelic Furs, Elton John, plus over Brits.
though there have been some Brits influenced by the American Sound. Unless we are talking about Rap and RnB or maybe een Bowie himself.
opinions please.

Most of my favorite bands are from Europe...but, i would have to say that most rock music is from an American influence. The early blues and the birth of rock in the 50's. Most of the early British rock groups will tell you that.

Back in the day the Brits had a knack of taking what America had and re-hashing it, say with the likes of very early cliff richard. BUt soon th ebrits had there own sound which was the Mersey sound. Apparently was a bit of a hit in the states.
later Punk was more of a British thing, ok Iggy and the Velvets but the DIY Punk attitude was a brit thing.
OK the next movement new romantic was brit.
Really I would say that America was more influenced by Brit in the modern music except for the case of most black "urban" music, aswell as the Madonna's, Jackson's of this world.
But overall I think the world is more influenced by the American scene.

The history of popular music in the twentieth century is essentially the story of white Americans (immigrants, frequently, with European sensibilities) appropriating and reconfiguring the music of black Americans. The product of that merging of forms is what the world started listening to through sheet music, piano rolls, records, radio, TV, tapes, cds and downloads. I'd say that America only started consuming British pop in the Sixties, but all the forms from ragtime to rap are American in their origin.

Historically, definitely UK more influenced by the US. In recent times I would say it's been pretty evenly reciprocal.
The UK punches well above its weight when you consider the population size comparison with the U.S.
It's a creative little island:
The Beatles, The Stones, Oasis, Bowie, Blur, Pet Shop Boys, Tom Jones, The Who, Pink Floyd, , Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, The Police, The Sex PIstols, Radiohead, Coldplay, Genesis, Phil Collins, Muse, Artic Monkeys, The Smiths, Queen, The Stone Roses, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, LEd Zepplin, Amy Whinehouse, Manics, Pulp, The Jam / Paul Weller, The Killers, Basement Jaxx, Take That, The Spice Girls, Suede, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Girl Aloud, Elton John, Rod Stewart, John Lennon, Paul McCartney / Wings, Robert Palmer, George Michael, The Eurythymics, Goldfrapp, Duffy, Dire Straits, Dido, Bee Gees, UB40, Seal....& U2
