"Sci-fi was a shared love with my dad. We went through a phase when he would show me Kubrick films - I remember watching A Clockwork Orange when I was way too young for it, but he was lovely and talked me through it - and this was another one we watched back then. 2001, along with Solaris, was the grandfather of all contemporary science-fiction films because it initiated the whole idea of doing serious science-fiction, as opposed to the more B-movie Forbidden Planet-style '50s sci-fi. Kubrick caused a sea-change in the genre firstly by coming up with the technical innovations that allowed us to create sci-fi films that felt believable, and then by telling mature, thoughtful, interesting stories. I can understand why people think of 2001 when they see Moon, but I really believe that Outland and Silent Running were inspired by 2001 and Moon was inspired by them. There's a generational skip.

But no TMWFTE!

I thought there were elements of "Silent Running" in "Moon."
I'd add the original "Alien" to a list of Top Whatever, but I didn't watch movies with the Jones family.

You never know the real story.

And I'm afraid I love 50s movies...especially with giant ants!
