In response to: "I can't stand his raspy vocals on David Live"
I agree with you to a certain extent, Scott. Bowie's hoarse vocals on David Live are not always easy on the ear and here and there, for example on 'Sweet Thing', they certainly leave a lot to be desired. However, his vocals sound just fine on these tracks: Rebel Rebel, All The Young Dudes, Cracked Actor, Knock On Wood, Here Today Gone Tomorrow and of course, the already mentioned Rock 'n' Roll Suicide.
1. Reviews at the time indicated that he was flat in more than a few places on David Live. They were right. He is a bit all over the place vocally, which is to be admired somewhat when you consider how many things they touched up for the release.
2. It's odd that "Sweet Thing" came up as a bad example. I actually consider that track to be the shining moment on the record, a mysterious, tense performance that adds to the song. I know I'm not alone in liking it, as I've read on this very board comments from several fans and bootleg collectors of that period who all consider the David Live version to be the definitive live performance of "Sweet Thing."
3. Personally, I don't think the audience claps were fake or pulled from sound effect libraries, but they were probably flown in from other parts of the recording to fill out the applause a bit.

I agree with you to a certain extent, Joe. The band sounds great on 'Sweet Thing'; Bowie, however, does not -
The DL version of Sweet Thing is one of the most beautiful songs, in every department, I have ever heard. The Strange Fascination one is most queer to my ears! However, It's Gonna Be Me more than compensates.
