can anyone tell if the new nick pegg book, will have anything different from the last one,i have all the other revised books and will buy this if it has anything new,but seeing as bowie hasnt spoke in the last 5 years i cant see anything worth putting in it.
I reckon Pegg (or anyone else) could easily craft a DB related book out of the postings here on this forum. Sure, it would take a lot of wading through nonsense to excavate some gems of ideas and opinions, but I've read some great stuff here over the years.
It goes back for over 10 years, so 3650 days x 100 posts a day (there have been over 100 posts today, so far) = 365,000 posts.
Thanks for that number, Paul. I meant to say at least 365,000 posts as it's pretty quiet here at the moment, yet the 17th of August still got over 100 posts.
You sure the average thread has 20 posts? I would say it's half that. I just went back to page 50 and counted 441 posts over the 50 threads on that page, which gives an average of 8.82 posts per thread/ subject. If that number was average that wold give us 441 posts per page x by 1182 pages = 0.5 million posts.
got me thinkin`
james brown - godfather of soul
micheal jackson - king of pop
elvis - king
madonna - bitch
iggy pop - grandfather of punk
paul weller - modfather
db - thin white duke, ziggy,
bryan ferry - mr cool
posh spice - posh spice
cliff richard - batchalor boy
billy idol - king rocker
bonnie tyler - lost in france
phil colins - ?
george micheal - 5 0` clock shadow
It seems like this book is a reissue of a reissue for the sake of it, like a lot of things Bowie these days. I mean aren't the previous editions of this book enough when it comes to all the information you really need to know with regards to db?
Save your money and support artists that need your support and who are currently doing something worthwhile to warrant it, as in releasing some worthwhile new music into the public arena.
<< a cut'n'paste job anyway, pilferred from websites such as this.>>
Quite possibly Annie but credit where it's due, Peggs Bowie bible has generally been the most read and authoritative book on db when you need to find out something, especially when you start forgetting things as you get older like me.
I just can't see the point of this latest re issue of it unless you haven't already got one of the previous editions. Isn't the cover picture even the same as the last edition of it?
Maybe he will post details of the new edition on this message board as I believe he did last time?? Most of us would like to know whether it is worth buying if we have all the previous issues. Please Mr Pegg?????
Reynolds & Hearn, the publishers of The Complete David Bowie , will be issuing a press release about the new edition fairly soon, but in the meantime I'm more than happy to confirm a few things.
First of all, the release date and the cover image which currently appear on Amazon are both inaccurate. Amazon often uses a previous image until they get around to uploading the new one. I can confirm that the new edition will have a brand new cover, and very nice it looks too - it will appear with the press release. As for the publication date: I'm not sure where Amazon got their date from, but in fact the book is scheduled for late September.
Secondly, despite the fact that things have been a little quiet on the Bowie front over the last couple of years, you might be interested to know that the new edition is actually a considerably larger update and expansion than the previous one. The last edition, published in 2006, added approximately 17,000 new words to the overall count, while this new edition adds around 30,000 new words on top of that - so there's nearly twice as much "new stuff" as last time. I have of course updated the coverage of David Bowie's recent work and releases (and when you add it all up, there's actually rather more than you might think - since the last edition of the book we've had the release of The Prestige, Extras and Arthur and the Invisibles, the 2006 Black Ball performance, the High Line Festival, the Scarlett Johansson tracks, August, Bandslam, SpongeBob SquarePants (!), VH1 Storytellers, EMI's downloads of all those 1980s singles and B-sides, iSelectBowie, the Young Americans special edition, the Glass Spider DVD/CD, and plenty more besides) ... and over and above all of that, I have added a great deal of new material to the older entries: new information about classic songs, albums, demos, and of course the various material that has found its way onto the collector's circuit in recent years, such as the Tin Machine out-takes, Toy material and other unreleased rarities.
So I can assure you that there's loads of new stuff in the new edition. It is of course entirely up to you whether you want to buy a copy, but I can certainly say that I've done everything I can to ensure that buyers will be getting their money's worth!
Sounds interesting, Nick. Even though I've got the 2004 edition I'll probably buy the new edition eventually. I think that 'The Complete David Bowie' is one of the two best books written on Bowie so far, the other would be David Buckley's 'Strange Fascination'.
This is why I love the Wonderworld. Thanks, Nick. I'm clearing out a space in the memory bank (I don't need the names of certain relatives) for the edition.
Thanks for the info Nick (Pegg)it was much appreciated. When you put it the way you have I suppose there will be a fair bit more in it over the last edition.
Still from my own view point I will probably wait until it drops a bit in price before getting it, not because I'm being tight as such, or that I don't want to reward your hard work or anything like that, but simply because I bought the last edition not that long ago which contains most of what I need to know. Besides I'm not sure I want to be be paying a lot of money to be reminded about some of his recent exploits with regards to Sponge Bob and the like
But seriously, even though Annie says she comes to BWW to get info ( and she has a valid point ) I'm of the old fashioned school who likes to look things up the old way via an informative and authoritative book. In short what I'm saying is, keep up the good work ( updates ) and thanks for the past editions that I have which have been invaluable in reminding me of things I've forgotten or didn't know.
Obviously it goes without saying that if anyone who is reading this and who hasn't go any previous editions???? or who are still using an edition from years ago, then this new edition when it is released is a highly recommended purchase.
I'm sure I don't need two copies of The Egyptian Book Of The Dead, so I should have the shelf space ready. Since I'm new to this obsession, I'll probably have to plunge into the written word to get even distantly caught up.
Thanks to you, Mr. Buckley, for what I know now.
I'm very much enjoying Hallo Spaceboy (the follow up to Moonage daydream) - isn't it about time these got stuck together in one volume? I loved MD - and all the little innaccuracies are almost twee now.
Yes this is the best Bowie book out there I would say.
Pity it doesn't come in hardback - especially this time as it will probably be the last update required until that fateful day ...
I might know why but it's only a rumour.
He didn't have time to dot the I's and cross the T's,as it were, because he's in training for the next olympics with a view to regaining his record from the young upstart Phelps.
But the biography will be forthcoming, just later than scheduled.
Just to clarify about the cover of the new edition of The Complete David Bowie : the Thin White Duke cover is the real deal. The Ziggy image that has appeared on Amazon is a mock-up version. These 'dummy covers' are used within the industry by distributors when arranging pre-orders of a book, often months in advance of the actual cover being finalised... and online retailers occasionally post up the dummy covers by mistake.
So I can confirm that there's only one version of the cover... or should that be 'cover version'?
Looking forward to meeting lots of you at the launch party on 26 September!
Dear Mr. Pegg, thanks for answering questions and keeping us up to date. I'll be trading in my last edition for the brand spanking new one later this September.
I was wondering if you've gotten preview/press releases of the upcoming "Space Oddity" or "Station to Station" reissues, and if you'll be covering them in your new book? Will you talk about Nassau?
Another point of interest would be the aborted Ziggy 2002 project, and if you can shed any more light on the subject.
