| Not really a massive post this, but I thought I'd write it down while we're talking about Toy.
There's not much to link the Deram era to the post-Space Oddity stuff. Infact I'll list them:
Space Oddity itself had it's seeds in the Deram era and was demoed as such
Let Me Sleep Beside You appeared in a 1969 session
Waiting For The Man survived the '69 cull
John Hutchison managed to work with Bowie 1966 - 1968 and then amazingly reappeared in 1973
That's about it really.
All I really wanted to say about Toy is that while I'm not a massive fan of the rerecorded material, while people are saying Toy was a soft option / filler etc - it's worth noting that when the news was announced that he was preparing Toy (2002?) - it was every bit as daring and shocking as any of his other moves - TOTALLY out of leftfield that he was doing those songs having ignored them for 30 years.

Thats how i viewed it at the time too. Was really looking foward to Bowie acknowledging that part of his past.
Perhaps he over-used the band on the pieces we`ve heard so far ? Just sounds a tad over-produced.
But i suppose every `rock god` should have a missing album within their canon !
Love On.

It was just the last thing you'd imagine he'd do, and as such, I was looking forward to it massively. |
