Wild is the Wind
Is lacking a certain
something.... I really liked it
on my cassette player, but thought
it looked silly and pretentious when I
finally watched the video.
NB!!! I really like Bowie videos otherwise.
I would have to agree on NKS. Here we had one of his best singles in a while, wasted on a good idea that was so poorly executed it pissed me off just watching it. I mean, what a neat and cool idea- but it was as if no one gave more than a cursory thought to the imagery or story and it just kinda happens- loosing any momentum the songs possessed.
I reckon DJ is actually a good idea badly executed. Looks kinda cheesey. I also absolutely hated the video to Strangers When we Meet. A favourite song ruined by ugly imagery. Music videos actually haven't served Bowie that well. All the 70's ones were made before MTV so were rarely seen Ashes to Ashes was a masterstroke and the Let's Dance Videos were all great. After that the videos were either rarely seen because the single didn't chart or the video was banned. How often do we see the I'm afraid of Americans video or the excellent Little Wonder video which seemed to be banned for being too scary? Watch any music channel on TV and you'll wait a long time before seeing any Bowie videos. The best of his career was over before videos really caught on.
It's so subjective isn't it?
I suppose it depends on what the
musician/videographer are trying to
communicate and how ready we, the
audience are ready to receive it.
... I guess I could give WitW the
benefit of the doubt
:-/
I think it's a real shame that the last record Bowie made any proper promos for was hours. I agree, New Killer Star doesn't work. It also annoys me now that the past has been reinvented to such an extent that Michael Jackson gets all the credit for 'inventing' modern music video.
By the way, my website will be up in the autumn. Am hoping to have some exclusive interview material up there too at some stage.
I've been worrying over my Bowiecature like an angry pit bull for months now, and the secret seems to have been figuring out how to simplify him. Too many lines and he's not Mr. Bowie anymore - even at this age he's quite geometrical.
Remember he wasn't still with a record label at that point. I think they fund it then it gets taken back out of any profits. Bowie was only having his records distributed by a major so ISO would have to fund them.
I haven't watched the NKS video in years it was that bad. Wasn't it something like a load of pictures messed about with via a computer or something?
The concept is actually not that bad- I was really excited when it first started- but the execution is very poor in my opinion. The idea of a lenticular picture book fits in very well with the "Reality Concept" but the story and even the "facsimile lenticular images" don't really work. And it's boring.
