Hi, watching the Bowie Dublin DVD led me to a few questions. At the end of the song, Heathen, Gail leads Bowie slowly off the stage. Bowie impersonates a blind man.
My questions are, Why does Bowie, in the song and album "Heathen," picture himself blind? What lyrics in the song deal with the subject of going blind? Is this blindness real? What does "Heathen" have to do with blindness?
I have to conclude Bowie is talking about a figurative blindness, about a heathen who does not see the light. There is a verse that says, "if the blind lead the blind, they both shall fall in the ditch."
In the song the sun is going down and the darkness begins. The narrator is enveloped in darkness; he cannot see. Having "stared too long," the one thing he can "see" is his eyesight dying. The narrator is a heathen, in moral darkness.
In order to illustrate this song, Gail leads Bowie off the stage because he is blind and cannot see the truth. Talk about tortured lyrics.
I want to give a shout out to all BWW members. Have a good day, a good morning, enjoy that first cup of coffee. I'm going to be agonizing about getting that new guitar. Decisions, decisions!
